Katalyzt13
Does anybody know where to get a good rebuild kit for a fair price? I've never rebuilt an engine before...really nothing near this size of job...so it will be interesting.
87MJTIM
Where do you live? That will help us in order to give you the name of machine shops. About 5 years ago I inquired of two shops in my area (Frederick MD) an estimate for a whole block rebuild. I was quoted between $2000 and $2500. Both estimates were conditional on the condition of the engine in the beginning. (I ended up having it rebuilt by a client. We bartered the services.) ftpiercecracker1
If you have the money to rebuild it, maybe stroke it while your at it? Add a few extra ft/lbs, hmmmmm? Otherwise it would be far FAR cheap to by a used one out of a junkyard. I bought mine about 5 years ago, 110k for $250 Still going strong. Also, if you're not inclined to pull it yourself, put an ad on Craigslist, "$$$, pull engine for me at junkyard". This is what I did, $100, had someone lined up within an hour. Pete M
what happened to the current one?
Katalyzt13
I live in northwest Georgia. it has started running rough so a little troubleshooting and I discovered that the oil smells like gas, which I'm taking to mean that at the very least the rings are blown. Pete M
definitely sounds plausible. but I would run a compression test and leakdown test before writing it off. just to be sure.
sinkrun
Could be leaky injectors?
Katalyzt13
Sorry for the late response - unforeseen circumstances have kept me away from this problem for a while. I'm not sure about the injectors - I had kind of ruled that out based off of the nature of how it had begun running leading up to this. Maybe I need to revisit.
