Complete Axle Swaps

Hey Just found this out today, not sure how many of you are interested or care about this but I think it is exciting stuff. East Coast Gear Supply is now offering bolt complete axle swaps for mj's! I know they did cherokees and other jeeps for a while but its cool that now you can go to their website, setup what a rear axle and have it delivered and just bolt it up to your truck. They have serveral options, 8.8, 44, and there homebrew 489 rear axles. You can also order the xj fronts for our mjs. It may not be the full bolt 1 ton axle swaps some guys want but I think it is cool none the less.

I was actually pricing out an 8.8 swap vs 8.25 swap for my mj and after regearing, locker, perches and all. I am thinking about just saving up and ordering an 8.8 mj axle from ECGS and be done with it. I will price it out again if I do it on my own but this bolt in option does catch my eye

They can keep it for that money. You can get a Ford 9" built for less than that.

Of course you can, since the 9" is typically a cheap axle to build.  If you want it with 5x4.5" bolt pattern and disk brakes (with a parking brake), it's going to start to get expensive.

Or you could spend more on just a 9" third than that axle is, if you want.  It's apples to bananas, some people prefer one over the other.

IMHO I'd be hard pressed to spend that money on a D44, but then I've probably got $1500 into my own D44...  And the as-pulled XJ axle I started with was free.

I can buy an 8.8 or 8 25 both for right around $150. But most of the work that I would have to do to it I can't do myself, regearing the axle, welding new perches, shock mounts etc.

I would love to learn but I would rather not learn on something that is going to be driven everyday.

I know I can find an 8.8 with 4.10 gears and a limited slip in a JY but with the 35's i want to run it won't be a low enough gear for the 4cly

Interesting. It would be worth an extra $400-$500 to have it shipped to your front door and ready to bolt in.

I was thinking of getting a junk yard 8.8, spring perches and an Air Locker but then I’d have to deal with prepping it, having the Locker installed and having the perches welded on. All of that takes time and time is money.....

Yeah its really tempting, maybe when I want to go bigger I'll go with their 489 front and rear axles. but for now decided to go with an 8.25 as I have the parts to swap it in because it came with my lift kit
