Electrical Issues

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, having a bit of an issue here with my turn signals and reverse lights. So, when I put the truck on reverse, the rear lights don’t turn on. The turn signals don’t work, they stay on the dashboard like if they’re “stuck”. Replaced all lightbulbs and fuses look good. Do you guys recommend any other place to check? By the way, took all dents and gave it a paint job (mainly the original color).IMG_6407.JPG IMG_6405.JPG

Do the emergency flashers work?  Check the power to the turn signal flasher on the fuse box.  if you have power, swap the two flashers.  If you have power at the flasher and neither flasher works in the turn signal slot, check the bulb sockets, they are a common failure item.

on the reverse lights, check the reverse light switch and go from there.

Flashers work, which is driving me crazy and adds more to the mystery.

Take out the drivers side tail light....if I remember right there is a ground point there.....wire brush it till it shines. Reconnect it....does that solve it?

Did not solve problem but it did make it more interesting...

And then there's this.

Hi Cruiser,

Sorry for the late reply. So I did get around to taking out the taillights. It wasn’t a ground issue, but the bulb sockets were pretty much rotted out. Where would be able to find the bulb sockets and the wiring (possibly new taillights too)?

All the auto parts chains used to have a replacement socket that was a perfect fit for the XJ and MJ in the HELP! line. It was marked as fitting some Ford truck, IIRC, but I don't have a part number or better specifics on the year and model of vehicle it's marked as fitting.

Do your turn signals work if the tranny is not in reverse?  If so go to your natural safety switch connector.  It's in the engine bay on the passenger side next to the firewall between the engine and coolant bottle.  Find the black wire with a yellow trace.  This wire should be hot (12V) all the time.  If it's not run a probe from battery + terminal to the black wire with yellow trace.  Now test.

Check the female part of the fuse box, one half of my fuse holder kinda broke some so I had to add solder to the fuse to make it fatter and make contact with the prongs (yes I know it’s not a good fix, but I don’t have time to redo the fuse box at the moment.)

They work. At this point it has to be the bulb sockets.

Looks like I’m gonna have to do some research. Will let you know what I find.

If your looking for the Taillight Lens your $#!& out of luck there no longer made and when which is very rare a NOS set pops up  they sell for 500-1000 set. You could restore yours if there just faded lots info on You Tube.

Yeah, that looks like that’s the best option. All I need is to replace the bulb sockets and I’m set. Finding those has been a real pain...
