dana 35 rebuild questions

Recommended Posts

ok guys I have all the parts to re gear and rebuild my Dana 35 in my 87 mj, but as much as I hate to admit it I've never messed with a rear axle. Are there any special tools I need besides a feeler gauge to measure backlash, and any tips that I should know? And are there any write us for a r&r on a d35?

any help would be nice, this is my last step to finish my 4x4 swap!

What exactly do you want to do with your truck when you're done? If it's anything other than gentle street use you're better off ditching the Dana 35 for something a little less... twig-like. I can't really offer much more in the way of advise than that. I've got a Chrysler 8.25 from a KJ with disc brakes and the gears I want sitting back home waiting to go into mine.

You don't use a feeler gauge to measure backlash, you use a dial indicator. And before you get to that stage, you need something to check the pinion depth if you're regearing. The factory service manual provides all you need to know for the job.

well the hardest off roading its going to see for a while is the beach. And its only temporary until I can find a ford 9" or something else local. And it only cost me total of $200 for ring/pinion all the seals, bearings, bolts, shims ECT so I figured id get it done so I can finally use my 4x4.
