XJ Brakes

Since I replaced the front brake pads on my late wife's 2000 Cherokee Classic, the pads have been dusting very badly. Like, a week of normal driving leaves the front wheels almost black. With the factory pads, they didn't get as black in two or three years of driving.

 

Mercifully, the replacement pads are themselves getting close to needing to be replaced. Looking to step up the game a bit. I wouldn't mind an improvement in braking, but I don't speed or tailgate, so the braking isn't an issue. But I would like to get something that's going to run cleaner. Looking at two upgrade options fro Auto Zone. Any comments or experience with either of these?

Had the same problem with the semi-metallic pads; lots of brake dust and squealing. Tried a set of Raybestos SGD477C ceramic front brake pads. They cost a bit more, but they emit no dust, last forever and are silent. I've had them on for maybe ten years now, and they still look good.

Yeah, I was going to suggest ceramics but I could not remember what used last on the wife's XJ. 

 

Pretty sure they were ceramics, Everlast or Everwear.....whatever Advance sells, the better of their line. That was about 4 years ago, 0 dust.

I also have loads of dust from semi-metallic pads (Raybestos I think). I know it's not a fair comparison but I put Raybestos ceramic pads on a friend's 2001 Impala and he had very little dust. My wheels are purple-brown within about 500 miles. I'll be going ceramic in the future for sure.

I just replaced the brakes on my wifes XJ.

I used the Duralast gold Max ceramics DGC477 $51 and the duralast gold high carbon rotors $49.

We tow a camper a few times a year and she puts on a lot of miles. We got approximately 60,000 out of them in two years before I changed them. I thought it was steel to steel but once I had them apart the pads were only half worn but they did do a number on the rotors. They wore pretty deep into the rotor but fairly evenly.

If you you were using semi metallics you're going to ship your pants when you step on your brakes after swapping.

Also very little dust, if you wash them a few times a year you'll never see it.

Make sure you adjust or replace your rear brakes at the same time for best performance.

Looks like my link didn't bring the comparison through. The two I was comparing were the Duralast Gold DGC477C (ceramic) versus the Duralast Gold Max DGC 477M (semi-metallic). I was leaning toward giving the ceramics a try this time. The old pads are one of the two cheaper ones, but they all carry a limited lifetime warranty. I wonder if they'll let me upgrade for the difference in prive ...

Put ceramics on my girlfriends Honda CRV three months ago. She loves them no detectable dust yet. That's what I'm to on my trucks and Cherokee the next time. Pretty sure they were dura last.

When they hand you the box make sure it's the red box that says max ceramic on it. I was really impressed with how well they worked
