Windshield washer fluid in engine - oops

Came across this article today- looks like some unlucky SOB filled their Mini's engine with windshield washer fluid  :hmm: pretty impressive result nonetheless.

The brown mess at the top resembles something akin to head gasket failure, meaning that the oil left over in the engine had risen to the top and had been heavily diluted by the washer fluid, leaving the horrendous green glob at the bottom of the engine where the concoction will have been mostly washer fluid.

Here's the link to the article: https://drivetribe.com/p/this-is-what-happens-when-you-put-eIvUyFPcRHui_6CJaEXR5w?iid=OiLpAkLaTZCAmrxzJS5gdA&utm_campaign=main+&utm_medium=fb&utm_source=organic

This is why I hate anyone else to work on my stuff.

Stupid levels are at an all time high, and it's only getting worse.

That car needs a junkyard engine,

and the owner needs to never be allowed to pop another hood again,

ever.

Kind of reminds me of when a friend in high school was asked by his uncle to chang the oil in his L6 Chevy Nova,

instead of 4 quarts of oil, he refilled with 4 gallons lol

Thought he was supposed to fill up the valve cover.

it smoked a bit lol

Holy doodle, how in blue blazes do you mistake washer fluid for motor oil???

coolant I'll give you, but motor oil!?

They were low on washer fluid and filled the wrong thing.

98% of all vehicles I have seen have the caps labeled, motor oil, power steering, blinker fluid etc

but I guess minis aren't labeled. Oh well, not my truck/car.

Do you think this engine is salvageable in any way? I imagine it will need a total rebuild.

I was wondering the same thing, too. I think it probably depends on how hot things got in there. If it got up to operating temp for more than a few minutes I'm sure it's warped beyond repair. That goo would be an insulator and wouldn't allow any heat to escape.

What I'd be curious to know, though, is how long it took for them to notice, and when/how they finally did haha.
