lcoutback Posted July 5, 2017 Posted July 5, 2017 I'm converting an '89 MJ to from 2 to 4 wheel drive. Frankenjeep will have my '92 XJ 4.0 HO and both axles, with a '90 AX4/231J. I figured 'what the heck' and grabbed the tilt column out of the '90 XJ before sending it off to it's new resting place. My MJ has a bench seat and column shifter, both of which I am keeping. Is it worth my time to attempt converting my fixed column to a tilt wheel and retain the column shifter? I've never delved into a steering column for more than a turn-signal switch replacement....

No, it's not worth it. Too much work for little gain.
schardein Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 Converting a non tilt/column shift to a tilt, using a tilt/non column shift for parts? I don't think that's even possible, but hey... never seriously looked at it. Let us know how it goes. I once found a tilt/column shift column in a junkyard, but didn't have the tools to pull it. Who goes to the junkyard while on vacation? This guy.
lcoutback Posted July 7, 2017 Author Posted July 7, 2017 I'll probably let this little endeavor sit until a snowy day in a nice warm shop... I'll keep you posted! LOL
GrayWolf Posted July 7, 2017 Posted July 7, 2017 I've been looking for a tilt/AW4 column shift for my '90 MJ and haven't found one yet. I've gotten used to it, but since I installed my Dakota seats the space below the steering wheel is slightly tight, and the temp gauge is hidden by the top-left of the wheel. I would think using the entire column should be relatively easy, particularly if you went through the experience of taking it out of a donor vehicle. My problem, sometimes, is grabbing a part and not getting to it for 6-8-10 months and having to figure out how it goes back in.
