Jeep Driver
That's a late model CPS, what year flywheel do you have?
el_betillo
the engine came off a 94 cherokee 5 speed transmission. would that matter? I have tried both the late model and the earlier model crankshaft sensor they are excactly the same size.
Jeep Driver
Don't know, can't even guess at that one. But, something ain't right.
Jeep Driver
Are you putting it in backwards somehow? The plastic piece you are missing will not allow you to install it backwards.........but.............since you don't have the plastic piece...............maybe? HOrnbrod
The missing grommet will not cause this. Mine's been missing forever. For your 94 4.0 you need the p/n 56026921 CPS. EDIT: Does the connector have three round pins or three flat pins?
zithy
You could try enlarging the holes that the bolts go through so that is sits a little further out from the flywheel. I tried to get the CPS closer to my flywheel that way and broke one, but it should work in reverse if it is already too close. Also, the flywheel is partially open to the air (at least on my '88 Comanche), so I don't think the missing grommet would cause trouble as the chamber is not sealed. omega_rugal
check the flywheel, or are you sure you are not pushing the CPS too far in
Dzimm
Is the flywheel straight? It could be bent in one spot causing it to contact the sensor as it rotates around. How long do the sensors last? Die imidiately on startup or can you drive for a period of time?
ParadiseMJ
this is my 3rd one in a month since i did my own motor swap. was wonder what could cause them to break..flywheel ???? I don't mean to dis on your wrenching skills but you did something wrong (as we all have). It's not the CPS's problem, it's obviously being rubbed by the flywheel (or ?), until it gets so far eroded that it breaks. What kind of sound does this make when it does work? Does it make a different sound when you push in the clutch? Omega rural's question, is the CPS pushed too far in? To one side or the other? It doesn't look like it can move in/out but I know it can move side to side.
Jeep Driver
I suspect something came apart possibly the friction disc or a finger came out of the pressure plate something came apart and is flinging around on the flywheel the grind portion of the sensor is too small for it to be the flywheel itself
