brights indicator circuit?

Recommended Posts

ok so I'm making a custom gauge cluster for my 87 mj and i ran into a snag, well more of an annoyance. from what i can tell most of the lights in the gauge cluster use a common ground, ive successfully mapped the harness for everything i need but the bright indicator circuit is giving me problems. it gets its power from one of the turn signal hots and turn on and off as it should, but when i use that turn signal with brights on the indicator flashes with the turn signal. any thoughts? i can't imagine this is how the original cluster was wired but ive never used the turn signal with the brights on, can't really think of a reason you would.

88 Electrical manual show high beam indicator receive voltage from the headlamp dimmer switch connector (C177_3). This voltage is inputted to IC (C203_8).

C177 located LH side of IP next to light switch.

You can tap power anywhere along high beam circuit.

what page of the Electrical manual shows the cluster connector and does it label what the color coded wires go to? i spoke to soon, as it turns out i have it figured out less than i thought... i hooked up all my new indicator lights ans LH turn signal works right and my ignition power light works and brights work, but when i use my RH turn signal or hazards it looks like a flashing Christmas tree lol, so now I'm thinking some of the other circuits have dedicated grounds but thats all i figured out before it got to dark to work

I thinks you have a ground problem.

I think you have the wrong wire connected to the hot side of the high beam indicator. Why would you connect it to the turn signal? It's on with the high beam HEADlight, so tap the hot side off a headlight.

well when i was going through the wire harness the first time, before i looked at the pin diagram that turn signal is the only one that would turn it off and on with my brights switch, which i don't really under stand. pin 8 is what it shows i need . but i should be able to get it now. ill post back tonight with results, its been raining here in south texas so its been a lil hard to do anything seeing how i don't have a garage lol

One problem I had with the early style instrument clusters 84-87(?) was the printed circuit would start peeling and go bad, had four bad clusters. I tried to find a new printed circuit from jeep many year ago and it was no longer available, ended up finding a slightly newer cluster to use.

May just be the southern heat that helped cause it.

I thinks you have a ground problem.

pg 77 - Instrument panel lamps

pg 87 or 90 - Lamps: Turn/Stop/Backup

pg 102 - Connector views (C203 & C204)

pg 120-121 - Instrument Cluster

Sorry about this. I used a 1988 Cherokee/Wagoneer Electrical Manual.

its all in figuring out the right pins and go into it with an idea what you want. i was suppose to have all matching red but summit sent me the wrong gauge. i have to take it all apart Tuesday to wire the rest of the speedo with a gps sending unit. but the brights, turn signal and ignition run light are functional, the bottom 3 lights are going to be my 4x4 indicator lights for my np242. 2 amber for part time hi/lo and full time. i wish i could separate them a light for each but oh well
