Rough idle

Recommended Posts

I have a rough idle that fluctuates between 450-700 rpm. It idles real low at start up then climbs to about 700 after about 15 seconds then drops again after about 5-10 seconds repeatedly. Drives ok until I have to stop then it almost dies. Things I have done so far: copper plugs, wire set, cleaned IAC and throttle body, replaced most of the vacuum lines, fuel pump (bought it with a bad pump), back of block to firewall ground, and not related changed to open cooling. Any help steering me in the right direction would be very appreciated.

I also have some pics of wires that I need to identify.

This one is under and to the right of the brake booster.

Next one is to the left and even with the booster. Found it melted and laying on the intake.

Last one is next to the gray and black transmission connectors.

Any ideas on what they are? Thank you.

The one's on the driver side by the booster might be for the wiper reservoir pump? I don't have one on my truck so I can't say for sure. Has your truck been serviced lately? any work done?, for what it's worth you should double check your intake/exhaust manifold bolts are tight, I tightened the ones on my friends XJ this weekend  and he can't get over how good it's running. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Replaced the exhaust/intake gasket today no help there. Finished up the engine grounds and I will start running thru Cruiser54's list as time allows. Any other ideas send them my way. Thanks

I finished the distributor indexing and the idle is smoother but it is dipping between 550 and 700 at about 1 second intervals. Map has tested good, TPS is .84 what am I missing at this point?
