Fuel gauge and Speedo cable

Recommended Posts

Pretty straight forward here.

1st

What is the best/simplest way to regain a functioning fuel gauge?

Dakota fuel tank swap?

Cherokee fuel tank and sending unit? From what I understand new sending units for XJs are still being made.

Something else?

2nd

Does anybody have the part number for a speedometer cable for a 90 4.0 5spd 4x4?

I tried to do a search, but didn't find anything useful.

And to answer the fuel gauge question I would ask first what you actually have on hand.

Cable ordered. Thanks for the link, now I just hope it's the right length. From what i know, BA10 and AX15 used two different length cables.

All I have is what the truck came with stock. Fuel tank is new but its a few years old now.

I am open to any possibility, so long as it is not overly expensive. You think a budget of $150 would be enough?

That cable I linked you is for a 90 model year and there would not have been a Peugeot option then.  I have never tried that cable so if it doesn't work I would recommend sending it back and ordering the one I linked for the 88.  The 88 one is longer than the stock cable and fits with an AX-15, it is the one I used in my 88, and will actually fit an 87-90.  For some reason Rockauto does not list it as fitting a 90 though.

All depends on why your gauge isn't working. Mine was due to bad wiring inside the tank. Fixed that works great.

And this...  Without knowing what is wrong I don't know what to say.  If the sender is BER then it's a problem, everything else is either a wiring issue or you can steal a gauge from a junkyard.

And somebody could correct me if I'm wrong, but the MJ sender assembly can be repaired using an XJ sender, you will just need to do some fabricoddling.

That is my understanding. I also think it would be possible to modify an XJ sending unit to fit properly in an MJ tank.

My sending unit is fubar from my tinkering. So I would have to get an entirely new set up. Which is fine because my current sending unit leaks fuel anyway. One of the metal tubes that protrudes out of the metal flange is cracked around the weld.

It was my understanding that the XJ fuel sending unit was incompatible with the MJ fuel gauge. Which would mean getting a new XJ gauge, but I don't know if that would create more problems. Are MJ and XJ fuel gauges interchangeable?

If I can buy a new XJ fuel sending unit and modify it to work in my current fuel tank, then get a XJ fuel gauge to match, it seems that would be the best course of action.

The Renix XJ and MJ fuel gauges use the same resistance range (0-88ohms) and are interchangeable.  Later ones use other values and will not work.

I think there was a thread on here somewhere about modding an XJ sender to more or less work?

Also, the Renix gauge is fairly close to the old GM standard range (0-99ohms) and thus worst case I would believe generic GM parts could be used with either the gauge reading a little past full, or if the sender arm was bent correctly it might not be noticeable.

If that is true and the XJ gauge will just plug and play, then it would only be a matter of adapting the XJ sending unit to the MJ fuel tank.

The MJ gauge will plug and play with the XJ sender or vice versa, as long as your current gauge is a Renix one and it works (they're easy to test if in doubt) there should be no issues using it with a Renix XJ sender.

But i thought if you tried to use an XJ sender with an MJ gauge it would read backwards?

If you mix HO/Renix I believe they'll read backwards. The correct year XJ ones will read in the correct direction but not the correct level without modification because of where they sit in the different shaped tanks. At least that's my understanding.

I will definitely be looking into this. Will report back with my findings.

Good luck on the speedo cable. Been looking for a 88 over the past 3 months and still no luck

For an 88 4wd: http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=2950014&cc=1179839&jsn=407

For a 90 4wd: http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=4218006&cc=1179996&jsn=464

For anyone interested the link for the 1990 speedo cable works great. Just installed it tonight.

1990 4.0 AX-15 combo

It feels REALLY cheap, so I'm not sure how long it will last, but it's better than not having one at all.

Thanks again Dirty!
