New Member here, thinking about getting an MJ and looking for advice

Hi all,

 

I'm a new member at Comanche Club but I've been a member of the Jeep club for years (JKU). Recently I've been thinking about picking up a small truck and starting reading up on the Comanche. I think I'm a fan and saw one listed locally but since I just started looking I'm not sure what a good price is.

It has some mileage but if it's been well cared for that's not a problem. Plus it's an unmolested 92 - the rarest year of all. Run the VIN, and if it checks out as a clean TX truck it's whole life and runs and drives well it's well worth the asking price.

Awesome, I'll definitely check out the VIN to see where it's been.

 

I've heard to check under the carpet for floorboard rust but other than that is there anything you would make sure to look at?

Looks good, worth the money if the floor pan is good. Only thing that could make it better is if it was 5 speed IMHO.

It looks very clean. I love my '89. I wouldn't worry much about the miles, my '97 ZJ with 4.0 has 308,xxx and running strong.

Yeah this wouldn't be my DD and I've heard the 4.0 I6 is very well-built so I wasn't too concerned with the mileage. I'll see if he'll work with me on the price, maybe settle around $3,500

As long as it's as nice as the ad is leading on, I'd say it's a good buy. It's not a screaming good deal but the value of these trucks, especially late model unmolested ones, are on the rise. 1992 models are the very best of the breed, and the rarest year by far. Even more rare if it was built in the 1992 calendar year. This one seems practically untouched. The rear bumper is even straight!

 

Other than making sure it sounds good and drives good, the main thing to check would be rust floor pans. Expect there to be some minor rust, but for $4000 the metal better still be there. One thing I've noticed is that floor rust is generally less of a problem on automatic trucks, but it happens to some extent to every truck. Make sure to check the cab corners and rockers, of course. You might want to bring a weak magnet to check for body filler too.

First off, thanks for all the great information and advice, guys! I'm feeling pretty good about this and am going to try and arrange a viewing for later this week.

 

I saw he also has it listed on eBay and mentioned on there that the fuel gauge isn't working. After doing some Googling, it looks like this isn't that uncommon of a problem (possibly due to the gauge being electric instead of vacuum) and it may require a new sending unit.

 

With this in mind, how would you guys approach the asking price? I was already thinking $3,500 would be a good compromise with prices I've seen around the country and the condition (at least as it appears in pictures; I'll obviously do a more thorough inspection in person)

I actually found out that if you post an eBay motors ad with a VIN, it'll give you the report for free. So I posted one just to see the report and the 25 records were all re-registrations and one sale, all in Oklahoma. Seems pretty OK with me (no pun intended) so I'm going to go check it out later this week

Looks really nice to me! Wow stock tires are small. Even my 235's look big next to those. Check out what people above say- floors, cab corners, rockers. Check for oil leaks and that standard stuff.

That's a nice, clean truck and I think you got it for a very decent price. Considering what pickups are selling for these days, $3,000 for anything that runs and isn't a rolling heap of rust flakes is a pretty good deal.
