best jack ?

Recommended Posts

I think with 30s you could still use the stock jack.  Have you tried it to see?

If you need more, I would suggest a small hydraulic bottle jack and a small board to widen it's footprint on soft ground.

Many will probably suggest a hi-lift jack, but in my experience, that is a heavy, bulky item to carry around on a daily basis.  I have one but rarely carry it in my off road Jeep, even on the toughest trails.

I also use a bottlejack in my daily driver (31" tires). To go with it I cut a piece of 4x4 about 10" long and drilled drilled a hole 1.5" deep in it that the top of the jack fits in. This way I can use it under the bottlejack as a support/ riser block, or put it on top of the jack (because of the hole) and use it as a soft piece to push on something I don't want deformed. Has been very handy for multiple things.

In my opinion, I would go with a 2 - 2 1/2 floor jack for piddling around the house, and no less than a 3 ton bottle on the road.

Yes, bottle jacks are hit and miss just like the old "bumper jacks" from back in the 80s, but at least you'll be more likely to go pick it up if you drive off of it versus a bumper jack.

There is absolutley no need for anyone to carry around a hi-lift jack unless they rock crawl or drive around with 33"+ tires or a considerable lift kit. I can't even begin to tell you the stories of how many times I've had to remove those darned things from mall crawlers while I'm at work in the shop.

Thanks guys,I really appreciate all the good ideas. I have used the bottle jack and boards on regular pickups before with no problems. I might try the small floor jack that dosen't weigh a ton,but will pickup a ton. Thanks again.
