4-cylinder XJ or MJ

Not sure yet if I'm actually in the buyers' market, so I'll post here rather than in the Classifieds:

My current job assignment is winding down, and the next one will involve travel to two different construction sites. One is a round trip of 150 miles (per day), the other will be a bit over 200 miles. None of the Cherokees or Comanches I have now will break 20 MPG, and even that would have to be on a good day, so I'm thinking about trying a 4-cylinder. But there aren't any available around here, and I have no idea what I might expect to pay for one in decent condition.

Do any of you ever encounter 4-cylinder XJs or MJs? I'd prefer a slightly later one, with multi-port injection rather than throttle body. I know Jeep built them -- I just don't know where they all went.

What are they going for, if you can find them?

I just bought a 4 cylinder 5 speed 2wd shortbed Comanche for $450 and I bought a 4 cylinder 5 speed 4wd cherokee for $350. Both need lots of love and new metal.

My 2wd 87 SporTruck with 3.55's and AX4 gets the same MPG's on the highway as my brother's 4wd 95 SE XJ with a AX5 and 4.10's. We both get roughly about 22-23mpg on the highway. I'm rolling on 31x10.50 BFG KO's with a 3" lift and he's got 255/70r15 General Grabber AT2's on a budget boosted front end. If it MUST be a Jeep, I'd say look for a XJ with the 2.5. They'll be newer and, compared to my MJ at least, more comfortable.

Most any XJ/MJ 2.5 you will find for cheap in your neck of the woods will be high mileage, maintenance intensive, and have terminal rottus maximus. If you find a nice one with low mileage, the price will be high and it's cost will be on a par with the 4.0's. For a few more MPG it doesn't make good economic sense to get another old Jeep 2.5 even if you could find one. I don't know how long your high commute jobs coming up will be, but it would make more sense to me to swallow your Jeep pride and pick up a 10-15 year old Toyota, Nissan, or even a Suzuki commuter. Good used Suzuki's are going for next to nothing now since they stopped importing them, and they run forever. Plus the mileage and reliability will blow any Jeep 2.5 away for a whole lot less $$ overall.
