What to Look For

I am looking at buying another Comanche for an ambitious project, what are some things you look for in a good chassis or things that indicate a terrible one (other than gaping holes)?

 

Engine, Wiring, Interior don't matter.

 

Looking at a LWB

 

I set up a account a while ago but don't think I have posted so to give some background I have a

 

87' SWB, 91' 4.0 motor, ax15, 242, XJ 44 Rear, 3.55's, 33's, a 6in lift (that I’m hoping to replace soon).

If I am not mistaken, Jeep did not make an '86 SWB.  Better check your VIN.

SWB trucks started in 87.

Early 87's were actually made in 86 as with any car.

 

IE: Mine is titled as an 87 but was built in 1986.

True, but the title will list it as an 87 model, not 86.

My 87 as well. Was built in Dec of 86. All my interior panels are marked 86. Still titled 87 as mentioned

My argument wasn't "Is there an 86 SWB model?" It was that there were SWB MJs being built in 86.

Ok.  Back to the OP's original question.

 

Things to look for:

 

Rust under the carpeting, wheel wells and rocker panels.

Look at the wiring to see if it has been hacked up.  You said is an 87 with a 92 HO.  Did the PO swap the 92 wiring harnesses in the engine bay and dash?

Do all electrical items work?  All the lights (rear, brake, turn, back up, interior, cargo bed), radio, wipers, heater, AC, horn.

Is the spare tire carrier present and working?

With the 91 motor into a 87, I believe he's talking about his own comanche.

Bignuke, you are correct.  I thought he was looking at that truck.

 

Except for the wiring, he should look at those issues.  (Although, he should still look over the wiring.)
