Both the AW4 and the 231 should take Dexron/Mercon ATF

AW4 = Appox 4 quarts, run to hot, thru all gears and re-check, Don't over fill.

231 = Appox 2 quarts, filled to top of filler hole.

I doubled checked both of the spects for your "mid" '90's equipment ;)

What, not up to the challenge? If your quick with the plug you can fill to top & maybe catch it  half-way to the bottom edge of the hole. Serves no useful purpose, but, its fun to try if you don't mind oil possibly down to your elbow.

Actually, it's a common trick for guys who own SWB jeeps with horrid steep rear pinion angles to park facing down a steep hill to fill the rear diff.
What's a d35 call for?

I was told 3.5 quarts, but only have been able to get around 2.5 in. It's kind of needed info, for my daily driver ZJ...

Yea, I had to double checked this - And the D35 calls for 3.5 PINTS (Not Quarts) of SAE 80W/90.

So, if your only getting 2.5 qts in, then your over filled, cause 3.5 pts equals a little less than 2 qts.

This is based on <'94. >'94 calls for 3.7 pts.
