The gas tank on my 89 comanche is leaking.  How do I know which tank will fit this truck and do I need to order new vent valves and the locking ring?

The tanks very by long bed or short bed and are further divided by capacity. Most tanks will come with a new lock ring. As to valves I re-used mine. I got a Spectre brand off of Amazon for about $115.

I know I have to replace one of the valves because it's broken so may as well order 2.  I'll look at amazon for a tank.

Thanks

As noted, the shortbed tank is different from the longbed tank, so be sure to order the correct size for your chassis.

New tanks may come with the locking ring (I don't remember if the new tank for my '87 did), but they won't come with a new gasket. Be sure to buy a new gasket (it's a big O-ring). In fact, buy two, because you may tear one up trying to seat the lock ring.

Before buying a new tank, check carefully to be certain that the leak isn't where the two steel lines enter the fuel pump mounting flange. I made that mistake. Bought the new tank, installed it, drove to the gas station to fill up -- and saw gas running across the concrete when it got to about 3/4 full.

From what I can tell, the shortbed only has an 18gal option.  Its the longbed that has either the 16 or 23.5 gal tank.    If you have a long bed, you should already have a good idea of what tank you have, but if you need to, go measure it.  I know I have a 16 gal tank, because at half it never takes more than around 7-8 gal max.  That and my trip range sucks.

It's the short bed and I've ordered the tank.  Does come with the locking ring and the O ring.  I would have welded but there's some rust.

It's a pretty easy install. Just make sure to have a near empty tank when you go to swap it. I would also go ahead and change the fuel filter while you are working on it all.
