SomeNew Name
Well, I'm amazed at how many topics I've made in the last couple of daysand I'm sure you guys are quiet annoyed, but I have 2 days left to get this thing back on the road before I move.. so I'm going to go ahead and ask When I installed my tail light harness, and put all the bulbs back in.. everything works except my left turn signal... when I put my left turn signal on, my rear lights flash just like the hazards on both sides... and up in the front too but the bulb on the right side is flashing very dimmy like it's just getting a wee bit of juice.... most likely a short some where but I don't have time to trace it down myself.. so I've called you guys into service.. any ideas? JOMJ87
Short is my first thought but you may check the flashers. Sometimes a bad one will do crazy things. Cole
SomeNew Name
do ya think a bad bulb could do it.. cause I just grabbed any ol'e bulb I could find and slapped'er in there
MiNi Beast
You installed the wiring harness? The rear harness from the cab back? When I switch out all my wiring in the whole truck I had same problem, due to the wiring being crossed up by the cab. So I unplugged the harness and ran hot lead to each wire to find which wire went to each light. then made sure the rear lights had their seperate leads. And also a slight possibilty, maybe your turn signal switch, but more so if light comes on and don't blink, than both coming on and blinking. I could agree with being bad balb, but you say you installed new wiring so I would double check there. Good luck with it if have any more questions let me know. SomeNew Name
Nah it's not new wiring, it's the old harness I just disconnected it and re-installed it. But when you mentioned the turn signal switch.. I began to think about it. When it's set to give the left turn signal, you can hear more than one latching relay going... like it's the hazards going, nah mean?
1986Comanche
Well, I'm amazed at how many topics I've made in the last couple of daysand I'm sure you guys are quiet annoyed, but I have 2 days left to get this thing back on the road before I move.. so I'm going to go ahead and ask When I installed my tail light harness, and put all the bulbs back in.. everything works except my left turn signal... when I put my left turn signal on, my rear lights flash just like the hazards on both sides... and up in the front too but the bulb on the right side is flashing very dimmy like it's just getting a wee bit of juice.... most likely a short some where but I don't have time to trace it down myself.. so I've called you guys into service.. any ideas? My guess is that you have the wrong bulb or bulbs in the left taillight. If you have a 1156 single filament bulb in the taillight where a 2057 double filament bulb is supposed to be it will do what you are describing. Are all your dash lights blinking with the turn signal too? What the single filament bulb does is connect both the contacts in the socket and when the turn signal blinks it feeds back through the electrical system which would explain why your front turn signals and the other taillight are blinking too. It is feeding back through the parking light side of the system causing all the lights to blink like the turn signals and they are all in one on the Comanche parking lights/turn signals thats why they are double filament bulbs Both top bulbs in the taillight are supposed to be a 2057 double filament bulb and the bottom bulb is supposed to be a 1156 single filament bulb for the reverse lights. Hope this info helps.
comancheman
check grounds in the light bulb socket. i had a bad ground in my left front blinker. when i would turn on the left turn signal my hazards would go off along with light in the floor by the tcase lever. i pulled out the bulb and bent the tab that grounds the bulb in the socket then reinstalled and my problems went away
sinnaevd
when mine did that it was because my left front turning signal outlet was poo poo
Kenosha Warrior
Its most definately a bad ground. Mine did that when the P.O turkeyass'ed a trailer harness in. Bad grounds all 'round. my dad said he's surprised the MJ hadn't burned down yet.
SomeNew Name
sorry I haven't been around I've been In base Borden teaching Aircraft servicing to the noobie reserves there.. so I haven't been able to get anywhere near the truck .. but I'm back in town now. and ready to get going on this one.. and I discovered another issue with this bad boy... when the hazards are on the clock on the radio goes on and off with it too :(
SomeNew Name
well I still haven't heard anything on this one.. and also I've discovered that the radio clock lite (stock radio) not only goes on and off with the hazards but also when ever the brakes are applied.. anyone help on this one? or had a similar problem? figured I would post in the same topic I made to make less of a topic mess! Thanks in advance guys!!
HOrnbrod
What year is your MJ? Clock radios were not an MJ option until 1992. Also, if you install a 1992-1996 clock radio, the radio dimmer lights will be affected, i.e. will not work. Don't know if this is causing your problems, but might be good to pull the radio and see if it clears up.
Wildman
You posted that you had problems with the smart switch (turn signal switch) and did you replace it or not??? IT sounds like you have a problem with the ground. Did you check the body to engine ground strap?? A MJ that I just parted out, the ground strap looked good, and when I touch it, it crumbled apart  You should replace the ground wire, battery (-) to engine, get a 36" off the shelf cable, and clean the connection screw at the engine block. I would disconnect the rear harness first to get the problems up front found, then work you way into the back and take the complete harness out, take all of the crimp connectors off and use B-caps with die-electric grease, or solder each one. and of course, remount the ground wire behine the left tail light. You could have a bulb in 180 degrees wrong, and it's back feeding to your turn signals/tail lights. Or you could have a bad light socket. From what you write, it sounds like a bad ground up front. The one '89 I drive, every time I started it, the radio went to reset, I replaced the battery cables, and it solved the problem. Hope this all helps ;)
SomeNew Name
well I fixed the problem with the turn signals.. but shaking the harness to see if something there was grounding out and there was... so I just soldered the connections and shrink wraped them.. but in regards to the radio.. yeah it is the stock radio from a 92 that I put into my 90.. it dims when I turn the dim knob, but it blinks and dims when ever the hazards are on, the brake is applied, or when I put the turn signal on.
