Internal / external slave, bell housing question

My 86 has the ax4 with an external slave. I am looking at potentially swapping in an ax5 for overdrive purposes (the ax15 swap is way about my skill level).

 

With that said, does it matter if the ax5 I get came from an internal or external slave bell housing? I am assuming (I hope correctly) that if I reuse my old bell housing and external slave, the ax5 should bolt up. Is that correct?

If your willing to swap in an ax5 then an ax15 swap isn't that much difficult...

I did it on my 4cyl and it was my first one....but like any swap you just have to have the correct parts and new parts to do it...

The only true issue I had was the ax15 I picked up was from a wrangler which clocks the transfer case up more against the body but a little massaging made it fit...

 

 

Edit: also to add when doing the ax15 swap. parts aren't off the shelf like a stock ax5 would be...or in a complete clutch kit...

the front bearing retainer must stay with the bellhousing so it will need moved too,otherwise everything will bolt right up.

 

you will also likely need to regear the axles to use 5th gear.
