EnlistedManche
Hello! I know this is a Comanche forum but I'm at a loss all the other forums have no useful advice. Some background info: Just picked up 89 cherokee laredo about a week ago. wouldnt start when i went to look at it, under closer inspection the negative batter cable was corroded all the way through. After a little sanding and some electrical tape it started right up. I paid for it drove it home. Now i've been driving it for about a week and then just last friday drove it home parked it overnight and the next morning came out and i turned the key all the lights came on fuel pump primed but got nothing when i tried to turn it over.. starter doesnt make any noise. Now my first assumption was my ghetto rig on the negative cable didnt hold up so i went and picked up a new one, put it in and same result. So i pulled the battery (seller said was brand new, looks brand new) and starter and hoped in the comanche to get them tested. Battery had 100% and the starter engaged just fine. (was coated in grease and mud before i brought it in) so i picked up a CPS and replaced that, reinstalled start and battery, still nothing. Turned to the relays cleaned them all off and replaced them, Now maybe I'm crazy but i can't find the fuze box in the engine bay.. Nothing theres 4 relays where the fuze box is in my comanche but nothing in the engine bay. Just the small interior one under the dash.. odd. So then i turned to the NSS i didnt replace it but i did try shifting through the gears while attempting to turn it over. Tested the battery with a multimeter which came at 12.6 V then tested the starter came out 12.6 V then moved the comanche to verify and its starter came out at 12.6 V (comanche runs fine) Have also tried moving the steering wheel height while trying to turn her over to see if its not the ignition switch. May pull the starter from the MJ just to verify thats not the issue. I'm not sure what to do from here. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance, -Adam Summary: Sudden on set, won't start. Battery is consistant under a load. When attempting to turn over, noise from rearend (assuming fuel pump) no noise from starter or engine bay. temp gauge rises all the way up. All interior electrical works flawless. New Battery, Terminals, Negative Cable, and CPS. Battery and Started tested fine.
EnlistedManche
Forgot to mention, i am able to grab onto the belt and move the pullys, about an inch in both directions, i don't believe the engine is seized but i haven't tried with a socket. it is pushing 200,
cruiser54
If you turn the key from On to Start and the battery gauge doesn't drop down, you're getting no power to the starter.
EnlistedManche
i'll check that on my lunch break. there is 12.6 V at the starter how ever. If the gauge doesn't drop does that still insinuate a bad starter even if there is power to the cables at the starter?
cruiser54
That's at the big wire at the starter. Nothing happens unless there is battery voltage at the little wire and the solenoid is good.......
scguy
What kind of voltage do you have at the small wire on the solenoid?
HOrnbrod
When you turn your ignition key to START, it applies 12V to the small wire on the solenoid. The solenoid acts like a relay. It latches when it sees the voltage, and the starter engages. Do you hear a clicking noise from the starter when you turn the key to START? If not, monitor the small wire on the solenoid for 12V when turning the key. If you see 12V and the starter doesn't engage, the solenoid is open (bad). If there is no voltage when turning the key, it could be a bad ignition cylinder or ignition switch on the column. EnlistedManche
first off thanks for all the replies you guys are awesome. So i tested it the battery gauge does NOT drop when starting the jeep. and the small wire gets 11.5 V when the jeep is being attempted to turn over. So from what I'm hearing is it fair to conclude its the starter? again it tested okay but I'm not sure if that really means anything, and banging on the starter doesnt do anything. It is very possible that the starter is the original from 89.
scguy
If you have near 12v on both the large and the small wire while holding the key in the crank position, you need a starter.
EnlistedManche
Okay I'll replace the starter tonight and see what happens. I will keep you updated on the results. Thanks again.
EnlistedManche
Took the starter in again and it tested good. But i thought what the hell, 50 bucks and ill get a new one. Came back and what do you know i tries to turn over.. tries... I believe the engine has been flooded from me testing multiple things and going back to try it, over and over. Never had a flooded engine before bu i tried the push the pedal all the down while turning the key to let more air flow. Not sure how to fix the flood, But whats important is the starter is now turning! Even though it tested good 6 TIMES! :fs1:
cruiser54
Pull the spark plugs, unplug the cPS and crank it over.
EnlistedManche
plugs need replacing or just need to be dried out?
EnlistedManche
and did you mean crank it over when the plugs are out and CPS is unplugged?

Was the old one soaked in oil? If so, I'll bet you have some leaks to fix.
