I have a 96 motor full harness and everything but the hvac stuff I also have a complete 95 xj that I was going to use the motor out of. Both are or were 5 speeds. I was wanting to know if I could use the 96 harness with the 95 motor and the 95 hvac with the 96 harness? Then what all would I need to make an aw4 work with the 5 speed harness?

I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you . I seen you started a thread in the mj tech , I'm sure someone can help you out .

Nice my second time there it's a pretty nice place

And it's either the throw out or I popped a line in the bell housing I haven't even got it off the trailer yet but it's got fluid coming from the bottom of the bell housing.

So I figured might as well pull the motor and do the swap while it's apart it can't be to bad other then having to do the entire harness

Are you planning on using 95 or 96 electronics? 96 is OBD II, and adds a second O2 sensor, after the catalytic converter. 95 is OBD I and will be a bit easier.

That being said, I do have both a 96 ECU from an automatic xj, and the matching TCU sitting on a shelf.

As far as the electronics are concerned, 91 through 95 is the same, and 96 through 99 is the same.

96 is a swap year, I own a 96 obd1 donor xj so depending on which one you have it could be direct swap. Chrysler actually lists 91-96 xjs as obd1 and 97+ obd2, but mvusse is correct there were 96 obd2 models.

My 96 xj was an early model, but still obd2, spliced onto the obd1 harness. The 96 parts xj I had was a later one and actually uses the 97 harness. Didn't know any 96s were still obd1 as I thought the fed gov required all 96 and newer model years to be obd2.

Or maybe they went by build date. I think they started th 96 model year around sept 95.

True. There were no OBD1 96 XJ models; they were all classified as OBD2. Depending on transmissions, LHD or RHD, exports, and all the other things that determine the various engine computers, the 96 PCM's were all OBD2 compliant. The 96 sensors were all the same across the board for the year too depending on equipment. But there were a few unique 1996-only sensors, like the MAP, which could explain the possible differences in wiring harnesses. But the parts manual shows no mid-year changes for the wiring harnesses; they are all the same for the 96 year. There are definite unique parts for the 1996 OBD1 to OBD2 conversion models,  just as there were for the 1991 conversion from Renix to OBD1.

Looked the same under hood, as my 91, what is the main visual difference if any? Also did the trans and tcase wiring not change in 96 obd2 I ask because it was plug and play for the mj?

Awesome thanks guys so basically to use the 95 motor with my 96 harness if have to use a second o2 but the rest should be plug and play and as for the tranny goes I think I got that figured out with out using a Tcu at all http://radesignsproducts.com/site/0cbe6b4845e04ad2ac00dc4b10d9c541/home?url=http%3A%2F%2Fradesignsproducts.com%2FHome.php#2512this guy makes shifters for the aw4 that let you $#!& gears manual just have to wire the silinoids up to micro switches and run a switch for the torque converter lock up should be pretty simple to do I'm gonna go with the fr1 he is still designing it for 4th gear sounds like well built stuff here
