Just bought an 88 Jeep comanche & 89 Jeep Cherokee have tech questions

Recommended Posts

As stated above I got an 88 comanche 2wd 2.5 4cyl with just about no rust on it.. I alaska no less. I bought the cherokee because I want to take the 4wd/ax15/6cyl and drop it into the comanche. I'm sure it's been done numerous times just looking for tips/ideas/links/guides anything you can offer really :)

take lots and lots of pictures as you remove each part from the XJ.  pics are free and can be absolutely invaluable later on.

I also suggest a factory shop manual (digital copy) combined with a chiltons or haynes.  each book has it's strong points and some explain certain things better than the others.

Well I've picked up a 2001 XJ 4.0 with a blown head gasket. But it has a nice interior, ford 88 rear end, fresh rebuilt stock up front, on top of a six inch lift. So my plans are to take the undercarriage/interior out of this one. What would you guys advise; repairing this newer motor/auto tranny setup and swapping that or use the running 4.0 in my 1989 XJ with the 5speed which hates gears 3 & 4.. And beyond that, where should I start? I'm literally going to strip everything I can down on the Comanche to get rid of any cancer I can of course but where should I start after that? Motor/tranny swap or axles/lift? Just trying to save myself some time :) Thank you for your time!

That 2001 XJ probably has a cracked head, coolant in the oil, and trashed cam bearings.......

I thought Jeep had fixed that head problem by 2001. Not so?

The "crack-prone" 0331 heads came out in 2000 (99+ on Grand Cherokees) and it took a couple of years to clean them up. So, yeah, it's very possible that a 2001 XJ had one of the bad castings. I had an 01 for a few years and didn't have any problems, but knew a few people with 01 XJs that did get a cracked head.
