Jeepjeff859 Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 I have a guy wanting to trade me a ax15 for my 4.0 swap. I'm using a 1993 zj engine but he said he has the fly wheel for the transmission and its external slave, will this work with my engine ?
teamsmith Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 others will chime in with better info than me but I believe you need to match the flywheel to your timing system. If you are using the renix ECU, you will need a flywheel from a renix so that your CPS will read the wheel correctly. An internal slave Ax-15 could be renix but is most likely OBD1.
Blue88Comanche Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 They did change form internal to external slave around 1994. going from a ba10 to ax-15 will require an input bearing swap for 90+ units Internal slave not external It could have had the external swapped in at a later point, but that time frame only had the internal others will chime in with better info than me but I believe you need to match the flywheel to your timing system. OBD1 started in the 91 models,
Jeepjeff859 Posted June 30, 2015 Author Posted June 30, 2015 the guy is thinking it around a 93 ax15, will this still work with the 93 grandcherokee engine
88whitemanche Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 I don't see why it wouldn't work.... 93 was a split year....the ax15 I picked up was internal but had the .75 size shaft.... Asling as you get the correct pilot bearing and correct clutch set you'll be good....
teamsmith Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 What harness and ECU are you using? Are you using the harness and computer from the '93 ZJ or from something else? My point was that I believe you have to match your flywheel to the computer that you're using. If you're gonna run renix, you'll need a renix flywheel. If you're going OBD1, you'll need a flywheel from an OBD1.

Jeepjeff859 Posted June 30, 2015 Author Posted June 30, 2015 I'm using a 93 Cherokee for the computer and wiring
Jeepjeff859 Posted June 30, 2015 Author Posted June 30, 2015 So as long as I get a 1993 Cherokee flywheel and pilot bearing I will be able to use the transmission
Megadan Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Just so it's known, the 1993 ZJ had the External slave setup. I know first hand as the bellhousing and transfer case I used for my swap came from a 1993 ZJ. I used a renix flywheel and clutch assembly and a pilot bushing to fit the Renix crank and AX-15 snout.
teamsmith Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 So as long as I get a 1993 Cherokee flywheel and pilot bearing I will be able to use the transmission It sounds like you are setup correctly on the flywheel. The only advice I can offer on the pilot bearing is to make sure it slides on your transmission shaft before beating it in your crank.
Jeepjeff859 Posted July 1, 2015 Author Posted July 1, 2015 Sounds like goo advice, I'm going to order a 1993 fly wheel, clutch kit, and maybe some different pilot bearings
