Incommando
Need more info. If it is an '86 m/t it is an AMC20. One year deal. As to gearing that mainly depends on your engine tranny combo. "Metric ton" alone tells us almost nothing. An '88 4.0/auto will be 3.55 regardless of the rear springs for example
comanchebuilder21
It's a 88 4.0 5 speed not sure exactly on what Trans think ax15 maybe
88whitemanche
Ok 88 means b/a 10 transmission....and 3.07 gears And you have 3 rear axle options Dana 35, dana 44, and amc 20.... Since it's an 88 amc 20 is out of the picture.... Unless that truck has already been modified.... Stock Comanches with an auto came with 3.55 gears and manual had 3.07 gears....if you had a 4.0 2.5 Comanches auto (rumored) came with 4.56 gears and the manual came with 4.10s
Incommando
If it is a factory 88 4.0 metric ton with a stick it should be a d44 rear with 3.07 gears. Should be. Anything can happen in 27 years
comanchebuilder21
It's not the b\a 10 trans I have one of those for my 89 an I know it's not that. I put 35s up on my truck an I'm just not liking the drive so was trying to see if I axle swapped with my other. If I could get a better ratio but I have 3.73 right now an looking for 4.10 or 4.88. I check what axle is under it tomrow it's a soon to be project truck if I ever get time so haven't really touched it since bought
Eagle
The Peugeot BA 10/5 was the only 5-speed transmission used by Jeep behind the 4.0L engine in 1988. The change to the AX-15 was made mid-year in the 1989 model run. If your truck does not have a BA 10/5, it is not in factory configuration. With 35-inch tires, you need 4.88s. shelbyluvv
2.5, auto with 4:56s is not a rumor. I have them in my 86. While rare they are out there.
comanchebuilder21
I had the b/a in my 89 an thing was junk an I shattered it so now I'm running a ax15 an I'm pretty sure it's same as the one in the other.ill take a photo of it an different cover so we can fully figure out what they changed
comanchebuilder21
How much would a regearing kit for a d44 go for that's what's under the truck now that I drive with 3.
Incommando
Was the axle swapped in or the gears changed. 3.73 wasn't a factory option. Gear sets with install kits will run from $200 & up depending on how good of a set you want. If the gears are 3.55 or numerically lower you will also need a new carrier for 3.73 & up gears for another $100 or so.
comanchebuilder21
This axle was swapped in so would I be better off buying a used axle with better gears or buying a set
