reubj
I pulled the valve cover off to perform Criuser's valve cover mod and replace the gasket. The valve train is really cruddy. My thought is to spray everything down with carb cleaner and scrape all the crud out with a screwdriver and my fingers before replacing the cover. Naturally I'll perform an oil change immediately after. Any other ideas? Thanks.
Eagle
Find a way to plug ALL the oil return holes. Pull the valve pushrods and plug the holes. If there's old oil in there that's been cooked, you'll chip of some tiny bits that are HARD, and they don't do nice things to the internals of the engine. Be sure to keep the pushrods in order, and keep the tops on top.
cruiser54
No!!! Leave it alone. Run Rotella T3 oil with one quart of Marvel Mystery Oil and let it dissolve slowly.
benjy_26
I'm with Cruiser on this one. Do frequent changes using MMO for a while. That should take care of things.
Rockfrog
When I pulled my VC when I got my MJ ... I was surprised the valves were even able to move it was so gunked. I scraped and vacuumed, then changed the oil every 500-1000km for 6 months (adding atf, sea foam, and finally MMO). When I pulled the head and pan a year later, I found crud to still be everywhere, lifter galley was solid, pan was caked, timing gears were surrounded ... Again with the scraping, spraying, cleaning and vacuuming ... then back together it went. Hoping for the best. She ain't perfect but 20000kms later she's still rolling strong. And the oil is cleaner between changes. Point is, if the VC is that bad, so is the rest of the motor, unless you plan to tear into it ... Let it dissolve slowly, there is going to be a lot of crud to work through.
