Hello comanche club, just like you guys and girls on here I have a thing for jeep comanches but I'm having a hard time finding one. I have been checking out one at a dealer. I found it on Craigslist. Went to see it twice drove it the second time. But here is the thing it's a solid truck but I have concerns about it. The brakes seem worn it takes a lot to stop, doesn't stop on a dime. I heard a weird clicking noise when I drove it took it on the freeway. When I got off the freeway had the ac on and I smelled something weird. Also once I got back to the dealership I popped the hood and noticed a little smoke I saw a lot of oil around the value cover it was some old black cruddy oil on there but when I touched it there was fresh oil on there too. Looked under the truck and saw some of the same cruddy black oil down their. It's and automatic and I couldn't get it all the way down to 1st gear. It only has one mirror. Some surface rust. I offered the guy 3,500 he said he had to ask his boss/ father today and he would give me a call today. What do you guys think should I buy this comanche or walk away a find a new one please help I really want a jeep but I don't want to be screwed in the long run. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/ctd/4912029950.htmlTell me what yall think

Purely my opinion ... short answer, keep looking.

While the dealer truck appears to have good bones, it's "all the money" and you know it will need work.

BTW MJ's are not known for "stop on a dime" braking ability.

The private sale is someone's project. It didn't get the love because they woke up and realized it's a 2.8 V6.  Even running "strong" as the seller stated, it won't get out of its own way.

^^^^^ What they all said. From your description, the truck is worth $800 max.

Amen. That would be a fair price for the one at the dealer. And the bottom one? Too many red flags on an undesirable model of MJ.

For your search: compared to a modern vehicle the MJ's brakes are weak. They use an unusual rear mounted valve to control the rear brakes and it has often quit working. The brake booster is insufficient. A brake booster/MC upgrade is a common and worthwhile improvement.

The 4.0 has a habit of leaking oil around the valve cover gasket as it ages. It will look pretty much as you described. The way it runs down the back of the block causes folks to think it is the rear main seal. Most of the time replacing that valve cover gasket and cleaning is all it needs.
