C101 Connector (To Cruiser)

Recommended Posts

I would be interested in an educated answer myself.

Experience taught me the  only advantage (that I can see) is that if you pull a Renix motor it limits the amount of harness you have to undo.... :dunno: ...I do not know if that was the intended purpose.

While we are all interested in the C101, would it be possible to swap a 5 speed harness for an automatic harness at the C101.  I know there is the wiring required for the TCU, but if the ECU where swapped with the C101 engine harness would that be a viable option for swapping to a auto tranny or would it still require a more in depth rewire?

I thought the TCU connectors were present but not used on the Renix 5-speeds. I would go look under the hood on my '88 XJ, but it's buried under about a foot and a half of snow.

EDIT: Sorry, I was thinking TPS. Isn't the TCU harness a free-standing harness?

From what i gather the TCU is a separate harness.  I just was not sure if the 5 speed and auto engine harness leading up to the C101 where the same, and if the wiring from the C101 to the ECU where different between the two

I've been debating an auto swap for a while. my current trans is in need of a rebuild and i figured now would be a good time to swap an auto if i wanted one.

The TCU harness is integrated into the one piece of the main harness.  I'm sure you could  unwrap it and pull the separate wires out of it.  When I swapped the 4.0 into my MJ I used a one-piece harness (no C101) out of an automatic 89 MJ (mine was an 87, 2.5, manual).  That did two things for me, 1) it eliminated the C101 and 2) since the auto/TCU/NSS wiring was already there would make it very easy to swap in an AW4 down the road.  Unfortunately, I ended up selling the MJ (and the AW4 I had acquired for it) before I did the swap.

I did have to jump the NSS wiring and figure out the reverse light wiring on the auto harness, but wasn't too hard to figure out.  I just left the extra TPS connector hanging beside the TB, didn't cause any issues).  I had to swap in the 89 ECU also.

Just to satisfy my own curiosity, what was the original purpose of the C101 connector on 1987 and 1988 Renix Jeeps? To help speed up production on the assembly line?

Correct. Assembly. Always remember that vehicles are designed to be assembled, not worked on.

I'd have to look, but I don't think any of the tranny related stuff goes through the C101.
