Steve Gregory Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 A couple weeks ago, the "high" setting on my truck went out. Now all that works is the "medium" and "low". Am I correct when I say I have to replace the blower motor?
Blue XJ Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Should just be the blower motor resistor. If you look in the heat duct that is in the passenger footwell you should see a few wires plugging into a sensor. That sensor has resistors on it to control the power going to the motor. Usually when it goes out, high is the only speed that works, but I would check to make sure it is still functioning before replacing the blower motor.
Steve Gregory Posted February 23, 2015 Author Posted February 23, 2015 I will look into that, thanks!
Pete M Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 yup, a very common failure point. they tend to rust out pretty bad.
Blue XJ Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Hopefully that works for you, since they are like $10 only.
Steve Gregory Posted February 24, 2015 Author Posted February 24, 2015 Is there anyway to test the resistor?

Am I correct when I say I have to replace the blower motor? No. If the blower works on any setting, the blower motor is not the problem. The resistor pack is also not likely to be the problem, because when that fails the ONLY speed that works is high speed. I'd say you have some detective work ahead of you.

You're right on the detective work, coming home from college today, the radio wasn't working, and the heat/ vents weren't blowing, then all of a sudden they were. Sounds exciting right?

Turn signals working? You may have a bad ignition switch and/or toasted connector on it. Probably got hot from the resistance in the blower motor circuit. Click on the link below to my technical photos and you'll see what I'm referring to.
Steve Gregory Posted February 25, 2015 Author Posted February 25, 2015 Just replaced the ignition switch, I can now turn my truck over and get it to run again after being out of commission for a day but, still not blowing on high, will do some more research.
Steve Gregory Posted February 25, 2015 Author Posted February 25, 2015 And yes, turn signals are working
Pete M Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 pull out the resistor pack and take a look at it. they have a habit of rusting horribly.
