Several trans questions

Recommended Posts

Yes. The mount platform on the AX-15 crossmember is lower, and it sits a little further back on the frame of the vehicle.  Luckily, the holes are already there for it, but you will need to drill and tap.  You may also need to drill two out like I did.  I used large nutserts of the same thread type as the factory holes and welded them in place with a bunch of tack welds and ground them flat.  A bit overkill given the ones I used had knurled edges, but I wanted to make sure they wouldn't move.

I did a BA-10 to AX-15 swap about a year ago.

On the up side, I believe you can use an XJ trans crossmember as well.  I managed to get my hands on a Comanche one for cheap, but they are a bit harder to find.  Do a search on the swap and you can find quite a bit of info on it.

Thanks for the detailed info . I'll be sure to grab it if he still has it .

Well I scraped the ax15 swap and picked up a nv3550 out of a 02 Tj to put in with 89k for 500 . He gave me the trans mount and bracket and transfer case linkage as well so at least I have something to modify if I need to .

So here is yet more questions :

What clutch will I use ? The one for the Tj or the Mj /xj with a ax15 ? The splines and diameter of each clutch are the same from what I can tell but I won't be sure what the bolt pattern of the Tj clutch plate is to match the renix flywheel until the old trans is out . I'm sure that I'll have to use the throw out bearing from the Tj , but would like to know which clutch to purchase ahead of time .

The pilot bearing seems to be the same between the two trans with 1.055 O.D. And a 7.50 I.D and is included in the Tj clutch kit 1890-05 .

I've read on a post that the nv3550 is an inch shorter than the ax15 ? So that means a custom/ shortened front driveshaft or the ax15 shaft or Peugeot shaft will work ?

Thanks in advance for the help advice .

The only part of a clutch assembly that makes any contact with the transmission is the splined center hub on the disk. The pressure plate, which is the part that you bolt to the flywheel, obviously has to match the flywheel.

Thanks Eagle . I understand that ^^ much and was hoping that someone that may have done this swap before would shed some light on what clutch they used or problems they had etc etc . I'd like to have all parts in my possession or at least enough parts that I can bolt the trans and tcase before I start taking the truck apart . I apologize for not being clear . I hope I'm not overthinking this . Thanks again Eagle

From experience  , get a clutch to match the trans, not the engine.

I did an AX15 swap into a CJ7.  I bought a clutch kit for the engine (4.2L/258).  The clutch grabs/releases all the way at the top.  The pedal does not go to floor.  I researched part numbers on Rockauto for the clutches used in diff jeep and the known trans.  The AX15 started with the intenal slave cylinder then switched to external in 94.  The part numbers changed with that model change.

I have to change the clutch in the CJ now. :(

Thanks Tim , those are some of the issues I'm worried about . Of course I can learn as I go along as you had to , but would like to do it right the first time . Thanks again .
