I was wondering what is involved to convert to 4wd besides the typical shifter, axle, driveshafts and speedo cable . I haven't seen the truck as of yet to know what trans it has , can I make the 2wd trans a 4wd trans ? I already have a 231 out of a 95 xj with a 4.0 and I know there are spline count issues . Any help is appreciated . Thanks
Strokermjcomanche Posted February 17, 2015 Author Posted February 17, 2015 Gotcha , I've done the auto 4wd swap before not so much on the manual and never paid attention as to if there was a remove able tail housing . So I need a 23 spline count right ?
87MJTIM Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 You will want a 4wd AX15, preferrably from a 94+ XJ. This will have the external slave cylinder.
nitroxsteve Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 If you have a Peugeot 5 speed you can change the tail shaft housing and cut the output shaft off to the correct length. I got a housing from a CC member and cut my shaft off and it works perfect. I didn't even pull the transmission for the 4x4 conversion. The output shaft is splined all the way up just be sure to cut it to the correct length. I agree an external slave AX15 would be great but if your trans works why throw it out until you need to. I'm sure you can find a junk trans to pull the tail housing off.

Thanks guys^^ I don't remember right off but I think the pukey and early autos used the same splines and I think its the 21 spline. I know I pulled my tcase from an automatic xj with mechanical spedo gear. Ill see if I can find the piece of output shaft I cut off and count the splines. I don't think the pukey spines ever changed.

Strokermjcomanche Posted March 25, 2015 Author Posted March 25, 2015 Ok I'm going today to look at an 4x4 ax15 that came out of a 91 yj . When I spoke with the guy he said it will only fit 91 / 92 because of the different diameter pilot shaft which he said was 19/32 And the shaft was an 1/8 in longer . He also said it was an external slave setup as well which wasn't till later years ,94? It has a115 k miles on it and wants $250 for it . First of all is 250 a good deal ? 2nd: from other threads on here The pilot bearing diameter seems to be an issue when changing the trans from the pukgoat to the ax15 . I want to make sure that this won't be an issue preventing me from using this ax15 . 3rd question is there any field tests when the trans is not in the vehicle to check to make sure it's good ? Thanks in advance for all the help.

You may want to take it to shop that specialized in manual trans and have them test it. Best to spend a little now before you install it a find out its a dud.

I already have a 231 tcase so this will be the first part of the swap . I hope it's as advertised .
Strokermjcomanche Posted April 21, 2015 Author Posted April 21, 2015 Ok well I found a complete ax15 external slave +231 tcase , Dana 30 , front and rear DS and a Dana 44 out of an Comanche all for $300 .Going to pick it up tomorrow . It came out of a Comanche with a rotted frame . I don't think I'm missing anything . I figure the ax15 was changed at one point being it's external slave .
