I'm sorry - another AX15 swap thread

The Ba10 in Gracie stops shifting once it gets warm. Today a 98

Xj with a 5spd appeared in the local JY and I laid claim to the

drivetrain. I figure since I'm gonna need to pull the transmission

anyway I might as well kill two stones with one bird... 

 

Doing research here I am now thoroughly confused as

to what I will need, what I might need, and what would be a good

upgrade to handle since the transmission will be out anyway.

 

I am not a mechanic - this will be a learning experience for me.

 

Gracie is a 1988 - 4.0L/Ba10 4x4 - Donor is a 1998 - 4.0L Ax15

Ive laid claim to the Bellhousing, Transmission, TC, and Crossmember.

I have a LuK 05-901 Clutch Kit and LFW193 Flywheel on order

standby.

 

Some threads Ive been reading say I need some kind of adapter,

others say a new linkage - The last LuK kit I ordered included

a slave cylinder and some other parts which the Ax15 kits do not.

 

I am full-blown confused now - information... overload.

 

I just need this transmission to do Daily Duty for about two years

until I begin the big restoration so there is no point in spending

real cash today.... yet I still want to do it right. What am I missing?

Since you getting the tcase from the donor, get the shift linkage.  My understanding is the profiles between the BA and AX are diff. The old linkage won't line up correctly.

 

The trans cross member and mount are required, also.

 

Because you are change from an internal slave system to an external slave, a new hydro system is needed - master, line and slave.

 

Since the 98 had an electronic speedo, you need to adapt the cable system for you 88.

 

I am not sure you need to change drive shafts.  You are not changing from 2wd to 4wd.  Your existing DS will fit the new setup.

 

You do not need any adapter for this swap.

You got it made. Take everything from the the drivetrain. The AX15, cross member, the tcase, T/C shifter linkage (very important), trans shifter, and the shifter rubber boots inside the console if still good. You can use your existing speedo gear. Nut, bolts, etc never hurt. You may need to change the T/C rear output housing to fit the driveshaft.

Grab the clutch master, external slave, and hard line as one assembly from the donor.  According to Mopar you can't replace individual components but, if you're careful, you can drive out the roll pin and separate both the master and slave from the hard line.  Picked up mine at U-pull-it complete for $25.  A lot cheaper than $180 new, even if you do have to throw a $60 master cylinder on it.

 

  I'd grab at least the rear driveshaft too.  The NP231 on the '98 is external slip yoke and you have an internal slip yoke. You won't have to open the NP231 to swap anything though I'd check d/s length prior to installation to make sure it's right.  I'd guess you'll need to cut about 2" off the d/s but again, that's just a guess...

 

  If you're going to go all the way you may also want to consider grabbing the front axle out of the '98 & save it for later.  You'll have the desirable '96-99 setup with the bigger u joints and will be able to dump the vacuum disconnect in your current axle. The good 3.07 Dana 30s are worth saving.

Agree with all. Grab that axle too. Get rid of the stupid vacuum disco. I would also check the little bracket that mounts in the tranny tunnel that holds the t/c linkage. I know they are different from auto to manual. Not sure if different for your application.. doesn't hurt to grab it. See if they will just sell you the whole xj. I actually got my donor xj for $450 from a small local yard. Not as new, but money well spent. Then if i needed something, i just pulled it off and swapped it.

No need for the ax15 TC linkage. I got all of it and used none of it. The ba10 linkage works great once you flip around the bracket that bolts to the transmission. Just need to drill out the mounting hole in the bracket for the slightly larger bolt hole in the ax15.
