will a tranny off a 4 cyl bolt up to 6 cyl or are they completely different?

Not that I have the answer...but... are talking Auto or Stick? If stick 4spd or 5spd?

2.8l V6 yes,4.0l I6 no.

They do not interchange. The 2.5L (I-4) uses the small bell housing bolt pattern from the GM 2.8L The 4.0L uses a larger bell housing, and a larger bolt pattern.

 

There are bell housings to install either an AW4 or an AX-15 on a 2.5L, but they aren't easy to find.

You wouldn't want to bolt a 4-cyl trans up to the 4.0 anyway (if I'm reading the OP correctly). It would destroy it in a heartbeat.
