Hi, My name is Sam and i'm new to this forum. I've got a 1988 Comanche Sportruck with a 2.5 and a 4 speed. A friend of mine said i could have the axle out of one of his Cherokees along with the transmission and transfer case. What else would I need to make it 4wd??? I'm on a budget so I don't want to spend to much money. This is going to be a slow build. Any and all help is appreciated:)

2.5/4speed manual should have 3.55 gears just like the 4.0/auto. The transmission will not bolt up to your 2.5 without replacing the bellhousing. Although I strongly doubt you'd want to drive a 2.5 auto truck with 3.55s.

He also said i could have the 4.0 if i wanted it. How much work will need to be done to make it work??? What all will i need???

would the bell housing from the 4 speed fit on the auto???

Nope.

There is a bellhousing for the AW4 that fits the 2.5L, but it's VERY rare.

2.5 with 3.55s and an AW4 would be a DOG!

OP, you got two choices-

Get your buddy to give you a complete donor and do the complete 4.0 swap.

or

Get your OWN 2.5 XJ and do a 4X swap.

And remember, nothing comes free, there is always a price.

Here's your running gear......axles, trans and TC, linkage, 97up front end, rad support, rad, engine mounts harnesses, ECU, dash, seats, brake booster upgrade......etc............go find you a good DS front fender......

The Ravines are damn near worth the price of the entire XJ........most are $350++++ no tires.

Scrap the carcass for $300 when you are done........cost you nearly nothing.

Now, go ask your buddy for a good 4.0 block and get to work.
