bumpy
yes, i searched naxja, 138 results, 10 pages.. all the bolts that hold the bellhousing are tight as fawk, sprayed them with PB and no I'm not a weak fawk :D driveshaft is off, i was just gonna unbolt the center crossmember and drop it all as one instead of un-doing everything... seemed easier until the bastard decided to not let me take bolts off  can i unbolt the trans from the bellhousing underneath or do i have to take it off at the engine to get to it? '88 4.0 ba10. ive swapped them out before on my ax-15 on my yj so i figure its as straight forward as that, correct? any advice would prolly brighten my day as I'm ready to put a rag in the gas tank and light it
mjeff87
can't get the 'bell bolts externally, they're inside :( 1/2" drive gives you more ummphh, you just need to get creative on how you can get both leverage and swing room on the end of the breaker bar. Become one with the tool, and add a heavy dose of patience when working :D (I know it's weak, but that's all I got...good luck!) Jeff
Cabz
The best way to get the bellhouseing bolts off is to lower the the crossmember and use a LONG extention for the top bolts. I left the lower two bolts in ,lowered the trans crossmember and got the two up top out first then I pulled the lower two. Those uppers are a sombeatch to get to. I hope your doin the whole nine yards while you in there . haveing to repull all that to do the clutch later will really bite
pingpong
Also I have encountered Reverse torx head bolts on 2 different rigs in the top 2 tranny bolts. makes it real easy to strip them out. Patrick
Cabz
Also I have encountered Reverse torx head bolts on 2 different rigs in the top 2 tranny bolts. makes it real easy to strip them out. Patrick I found the same thing on my MJ when I swapped engines, I found a 10mm wrench that fit it perfectly . Unfourtunatly that trick with the wrench didnt work for my daughters XJ on her 4.0 swap , The auto trans is a load of fun to get to those bolts on
mjeff87
another beauty of owning a 2.5 (like being able to pull the lifters w/o yanking the head)......you can get the top 2 bell bolts off from the topside, under the hood  There's just enough room to get a socket on a breaker bar on them. If you do have the reverse torx, replace them with regular hex head bolts (or even studs/nuts) when you have them out. It'll make your life alot easier the next time around. Bounty Hunter
Like being able to stand on the front axle to work on the engine ;) I just picked up another MJ, this ones a 2.5L for parts.
carnuck
If anyone is looking for that reverse socket, it's called an E drive and it's an E12 you need! (also used on 4 cyl and some 6 cyl starters!)
bumpy
so a week later, some blood loss, oil for a new hair dye, a bruised rib cage and 2 banged up knees... its finally back in and ready to go for a ride tonight :D how many bellhousing bolts do you really need? i can't find 3 of them  thanks for the advice guys..
mjeff87
LOL Bumpy...they're all kinda important :D The top ones are 3/8 16 (those goofy inverted torx ones that you should replace with standard hex head bolts anyways). The other ones are 7/16 16 (I'm pretty sure)....the two that hold the inspection cover aren't integral to the tranny being attached, they just hold the inspection plate in place. I've got some extra bolts (somewhere in my mess  ) from the multitude of AX5's I had in my MJ....if you need them I can look-see for them and mail 'em to ya (?) Jeff p.s....how many times did you smack your kneecaps off the framerails?
bumpy
welp... i didnt smack my knees against the framerails but i smacked my head on every exhaust piece known to man, i had the truck jacked up high enough to work under it (stock height vehicles blow to work on) when pulling it off, the trans fell on my chest, off the jack i had under it, ouch. then putting it back in, it wouldnt stay on the jack again so i muscled it up there with my hands and knees, i feel very old this week for being 22  as for the bolts, my dad works at a machine shop so ill tell him what sizes i need, i already replaced the torx one for the 3/8-16. i lost one of the starter bolts and the 2 upper bolts on the driversside of the bellhousing  thanks mjeff. mjeff87
Don't feel too bad. I was taking a tranny out of an XJ in the junkyard and it slipped off quicker than I expected...almost crushed my middle finger in the process  Not that you're probably gonna drop the tranny again anytime soon, but what I do is use a piece of cardboard to hold all the fasteners. Punch them thru the cardboard, in the same pattern that they come off the bellhousing (since they're different sizes/lenghts). Keeps 'em all in one spot, and makes putting them back in alot easier! Just be glad you don't have an AW4..... :D Jeff
pingpong
Doing what jeff says makes sense with the cardboard, :D but who wants to do thing the easy way. I justr throw them in a box (or whatever is handy) and sort them out later. BTW swapping to an auto tranny would prevent you from having to do this again
