Temp Fix For Leaking Coolant Tanks

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me how well a product like JB Weld works on the coolant tank to patch a leak? I'm looking for a  way to keep the tank from leaking for a few days until I can get a new one. Just purchased a new CRS radiator so will be using the closed system for awhile, otherwise i'd convert to the open system.

I wouldn't try to patch it if it has any leak at all it will not pressurize the system and the water will boil. Just go to NAPA and pick up a new one. As far as swapping to an open system I wouldnt worry about it the closed system is fine as long as your pressure tank is sealing properly.

the local parts stores (NAPA, Autozone, Advance, Oriellys) do not carry it and the local yards also do not have any available. Its my only vehicle and I do not have the option of parking it for a few days while I wait for one to show up in the mail so was trying to find a way to hold it over while I got one shipped here.

You CAN patch it...at leastfor a few days depending on where the leak is.  I did this and ran my radiator for about six months, before it started leaking again on my Ford Ranger. I've done alot of fiberglass work on my boats and a "plastic" bumper skin.

Drain enough coolant to keep it below the crack/hole etc. dry it out Reeeeal good (like with a hair dryer, clean the whole area with Acetone and get yourself some fiberglass fabric and a samll can of resin with the hardener.

Rough sand the area atround the hole/crack. Open the crack/hole a little to allow the fibergalss resin to penetrate with a small file/knife about 1/32" to 1/16" wide.  Cut some of the fiberglass fabric into little tiny shreds and mix it with a samll amount of resin.  Then dab/jam some resin (with the little shreds) with a q-tip into the hole/crack.  Let it set up and dry. BE PATIENT...give it a day. Re-sand the whole area around the hole/crack. Then cut a small patch of glass fabric...about an inch all around the hole/crack and with a new batch of resin, lay the patch of fabric in to resin, pull it out, carefully and lay it over the crack/hole.  Work the air out of the glass patch/resin with either your finger in a rubber glove until there are NO air bubbles.  Let it dry HARD...maybe another day.  Sand it if you like and paint it.  Filler' up and go.

just ordered this one, should be here this afternoon luckily. http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx/Radiator-Coolant-Reservoir/_/R-NDP6053404_0374044893. I have not had a chance to see the crack but its gotten bad enough that its almost a steady stream and I can barely go 10 miles before the coolant is gone. I have a plastic welding kit that I have not had the chance to play with since I got it, was thinking of trying that to see how well it worked.

If you can see the crack...drain the tank enough to get at it.....even better remove it.....clean it good...use acitone as above or brake or carb cleaner... sand or dremel the cracked area and around...apply a weld of hot glue with a high quality glue gun and glue stick.....since you are changeing it it will not have to be pretty ......use the hot tip of the gun to melt the plastic and work the glue in the crack good ....give it a liberal top coat......Hot glue will set up in 30-45 min...

coolant tank was a cheap chinese one but since I put it in everythings working as it should. Even the issue i was having with the engine having high revs has seemed to go away (for now, lol). Only in stop and go traffic did it get anywhere close to the red line (just touched it) and I picked up a factory aux fan from a 90 XJ today to help with that.Still have a 3 core radiator and thermostat that I plan to install still but its not as big a priority.

Oreilley carries the overflow tanks for the Renix Jeeps. Ask for Dorman # 603-300. Runs 33.99 and comes with a cap.

Yep. And promptly $#!&-can the cap it comes with and get a 703-1396 cap from Napa.

Do you know of anyone who carries the proper cap for the 4 banger overflow tank? I can't seem to get one that fits properly.

Not sure. Screw on? I would assume the same as a 4.0.

Yep. It's a screw on, but it's different from the L6 trucks. I tried a cap off a Renix XJ and my own ZJ. No joy. The ZJ cap LOOKS close, but fits too loosely. My solution was a piece of rubber glove under the remnants of my stock cap. Ghetto fabulous!
