Speedometer Not Working And Check Engine Light On, Need Help Badly

Recommended Posts

It's a 96 jeep Cherokee I6 with the NP231 TC. One day while driving the speedometer just stops working out of nowhere and soon after the check engine light came on. After reading through NAXJA and Jeep Forum I found that I should replace the speed sensor, so I did that and the problem still persists. after that I did some more reading and it said it could be the gear, I checked it and everything was okay! I inserted it back properly aligning it. Then I read about loose grounds and bad connections. So I pulled the gauge Cluster out and sanded an tightened the 3 bolts holding in the speedometer gauge assuming they were the grounds. Put everything back together and still check engine and speedometer still doesn't work. I know this is the Comanche forum but I've looked everywhere and decided I would start a thread here cause you guys seem to know your stuff a lot better! Any help would be appreciated! As always thanks!

Did you try the speed sensor in all four positions?

Give that a try. You may have it in the wrong slot.

Do you know how to check the codes for the check engine light?

Cycle the ignition key on/off on/off on and count the flashes of your check engine light. More than likely the code you will have will be the speed sensor not sensing.

Okay, what does the number of flashes indicate?

Bad advice. Your 1996 XJ is an OBD2 system - no key flashes as in 95 and below OBD1 systems. Since I'm sure you do not have a code reader to plug into the onboard connector, bring it to Autozone or similar and have them check the fault code. They will translate the fault code for you, then go from there.

When you're talking OBD-II you need to use a proper scan tool (buy one if you will use it lots in the future) and then look up the codes @ http://www.obd-codes.com/

So I got error code 15 which has something to do with the speed sensor...I've replaced that correctly, could it just be the wires are messed up going to it?

I bought a 96 new, and it had a working OBD2 scan port. It was toward the end of the model year though. The 96's are weird; an example is the MAP sensor. It is throttle body mounted, but the outputs to the ECU are the same as the OBD1 MAPs. The 97 and up MAPs are also throttle body mounted, but the outputs are completely different.

I have a 96 XJ, it still has the obd l flash code system even though it is obd ll.

I've also had 4 other 96's that worked the same way.

So, it's not bad advice at all if you don't have access to a scanner.

I use the allpar.com obd l chart to determine what the code is.

Did you try the speed sensor in all four positions? Try that first.

If it isn't that it may be a busted wire leading to the sensor.

Like it says for code 15, the problem is in the sensor or in its circuitry.
