Half Eighth

Recommended Posts

Here is a quick picture just to get the ball rolling.

Picked this truck up off a guy in Daytona Beach Florida.

-Its a '87

-180k miles.

-4x4

-5 speed

-Original motor and axles.

If your wondering about the title i can explain..

I bought it smelled SO BAD that the first thing i attempted to do was take the interior out.. while in the process of trying to unbolt the seat i ran across a cellophane bag with some questionable matter in it.. It was basically what was once weed but after many moons of being lost under the seat of a mud truck it looked more like a couple dirt clots.. I was so amused by my discovery that i weighed the contents and hence the name "Half Eighth"

Here is a list of things I want to get done to this by the end of 2014

-Upgrade the Renix Cooling System to a system that actually makes sense and works.

- Install new Gas tank and xj Fuel Pump ( i bought the tank without the pan in it don't worry)

- . :MJ 1: . drive this bi+^h

-Compression test

-Change Oil

-Spark Plugs

- Gut Interior

-Brakes all around

-Wheel spacers

-Wheel set/tires

-Shocks all around

-Change Trans Oil

-Change Diff Oil

-Change Engine Drive belt

-Get all the Lights working

-Clean up engine Wiring

-Clean up body chassis wiring.

-Pull the bed off

-Paint the bed (bed liner)

-While the Bed is off Reinforce the frame and coat it.

-Jeep XJ doors

-Paint the entire truck with durabak 18 UV protectant liner. (color tbd)

-Rear bumper

-front bumper/winch

(yes that is the sway bar you see under the front bumper.. They decided it was a good place to pull from to get it out of mud holes... IDFK)

Those U-Haul flat beds are life savers! It only cost me 65 bucks with insurance and it was a breeze to tow.

This truck looks good in pictures (from a far) but once you start to dig into it there is a LOT of work to be done.. BUT I am so ready to get this thing where I want it.

Yea, I'm actually in Plantation. The first time I called the guy off craigslist he said it was sold.. he called me back 10 days later saying nevermind its back for sale.. I was up there 4 hours later with a uhaul and a hand full of money..  When i got there i was taken back by the state of the truck.. IT IS BEAT to say the least. But none the less it is a good platform. Are you in any Jeep clubs down here?

My sway bar is also bent, but nowhere near as bad as yours! Does it even still connect to the front axle like that?

They ended up ripping the sway bar off the brackets that hold it to the frame and bending the hell out of the extended sway bar links.. so i just ripped it off and called it a day.

This truck isnt going to be driven on the road anytime soon so I'm not too worried about it. I don't like the lift that is currently on there either so i am going to end up replacing the entire lift from front to back in the next couple of months.

Sweet...and unfortunately no I'm not in any local clubs, I hang out with a few guys off cherokee forum that's in the south Florida jeep club....

We go to krome which is pretty much a mud hole. decent not deep like most that use those tonka mud trucks....

Nice! I have been up to JW Corbit a few times,Big Cypress countless times and planning on going to Lazy Springs with Black Sheep 4x4 but never made my way out to krome.. A buddy of mine is in Black Sheep and is trying to get me to join... Who knows

Don't those U-Haul trailers pull nice? Brought my 91 home from Pensacola, FL on one. Price wasn't too bad either.

That's not a bad looking truck as is. Have fun making it the truck you want it to be.

I like them so much I bought one. Just got in with it an hour ago. Wind hasn't blown the tracks away yet.

That bass hanging on the string is awesome.

Love the truck, what are your plans for it?

Trail rig?

Daily driver?

Weekend Driver?

Have fun with it and welcome to the club!

I found the bass under the seat in the cab so i gave him a new home hanging from the rear recovery point..

I am planning on having it as a toy... there are not the BEST trails down here in south Florida so it will be geared mostly for mud.. when life gives you lemons right?

When i figure out if this thing runs or not i will be able to decide what my plan of approach will be with the build.

So far (if it runs) I just need wheel spacers, brakes (all around) and tires to get it driving down the road.

@ Jim.. NICE! I might be next in line for a flat bed.. I'm not sure if i am going to register and insure this truck which means it might be a trailer queen!

Here is a photo of my driveway this weekend

YEEEEE HA! . :MJ 2: .

She runs!

I mocked up the new gas tank and threw it in there and she fired right up!

I still have to paint the tank so I pulled it back out and am going to put a nice thick coat of zinc heavy primer and a nice flat coat of flat paint..

I will take pictures tonight.

Here is a pic of the gas tank before I painted it. I was able to get an xj fuel pump so I had to buy the diesel fuel tank because it does not have an internal pan. NOTE..when you buy a tank it does not come with the vacuum caps on the top of the tank.. DUHHH. Of corse I threw my old tank out the day before the new tank got in..

  • 2 weeks later...

Dam,

I am so bad at taking pictures!!

I am going to try and upload some pictures this week of what's going one.

This truck has been taking up every spare second I have when I'm not working.

I have done a compression check on it and found the following

1. 135

2. 115... concerning

3. 140

4. 150

5. 150

6. 150

Considering it has 180 thousand miles on it and its not blowing any sort of smoke I am happy with those numbers. (its a mud truck... FU&^k it :rock on:)

Besides that I have changed the spark plugs, oil, and the entire cooling system over to an open system... SO MUCH BETTER!!

My interior is also completely gutted. I am going to pick up a set of some Moab wheels with some 33's on them tomorrow so I can drive around town as soon as I get my brakes done this weekend. So basically everything is coming along great I just need to take more PHOTOS! :wall: :wall: :wall:

BTW flex seal does not work very well on seats.. (just take my word for it and don't ask)

You may have noticed in my posts that there are twice as many pics as really needed. There is a reason for that. It took me over 6 months to learn how to post a pic so now I'm just making up for it. Besides, lot's of pics spices up an otherwise dull post. :D
