ninjaturtleMJ
I have a 86 not sure of what t case (someone said probably 207) but I can go from 2wd to 4lo and back to 2 wheel no problem but it won't engage 4hi....it just acts like its in neutral. I have found tho if I let it roll backwards and throw it in 4hi while rolling it will engage (but it won't work if I put it in reverse to get it rolling backwards only if I let it roll by itself off a hill) any ideas as to why it is doing this? maybe just time for a different one? cruiser54
Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual. "To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever, and then tap the gas and let off. 4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L". Have you checked the level and condition of the trans/transfer case and diffs yet?
ninjaturtleMJ
Have not gotten to draining trans yet but have checked and topped it off, but I have drained and changed transfer case, have topped off my front diff (need to drain and change it before winter hits), have had to swap my rearend (broke the carrier in the old one in half) but new one has been drained and changed. All in all I love my MJ!

carnuck
Sounds like you have an NP229
cruiser54
Sounds like you have an NP229 Really? A 229 is engaged by vacuum between 2 and 4wd. 4L is then selected by a lever. Have you decided to drop in and spread more false info to the folks looking for real answers?
carnuck
Guess I forgot to ask if it had a dash 2wd to 4wd switch (that would be NP228 or NP229)
cruiser54
Guess I forgot to ask if it had a dash 2wd to 4wd switch (that would be NP228 or NP229) In post #1 he said he thought he had a 207. He mentions the lever when going from 2H to 4H. That's NOT a 229. Here's an idea. Quit guessing about stuff and muddying up the waters for the original posters. Their time and money are valuable to them and it doesn't need to be spent chasing down your rabbit trails.
carnuck
The word lever is not in the first post. I did re-read and see he's talking std trans, so that puts out the other cases.

Well maybe if you read more and responded less, this crap wouldn't happen. Think about that.
HOrnbrod
Carnuck, do you even read the entire post before you pop out the first thing that occurs to you? Anyone who posts up 25-30 posts in 30 minutes on multiple threads can not be posting an accurate informed reply that will benefit our members. Or are you simply trying to build up your post count? C'mon man..........
