My XJ started making a nasty clicking sound one morning on my way home from work, was definitely from the front, left side.  Wasn't there while moving, and clicked faster the faster I went.  U-joints were fine, truck drove fine, braked fine.

Determined it was a rock stuck in the tread.

Good Luck.  Since you asked. I know because I just bolted up a set of new tires/wheels I scored from my buddy ( THANKS P.S. ) and almost immediately noticed this....click, click, click from the left front...Pulled the wheel the wheel had a double layer of stick on weights.... the spring on the caliper was scraping the double stacked weights....so I swapped it with the wheel from the back.  :)

I doubt that could be the problem because the clicking had just started like a week ago and also I have 1 year old jeep wrangler sport rims and tires w/ a wheel spacer and don't think it would be scraping against it but you know any things possible .
