Looking For Someone To Let Me Test Drive Their Manual Comanche (Illinois)

Greetings fellow Comanche lovers. It occurred to me recently in my search for a Comanche of my own that I've never actually DRIVEN one, and it would probably help in my decision making of what to look for in one if I did. The most experience I have in a Jeep is a 94 ZJ 4.0 with the Select-Trac, so at least I have that much. But I've never driven a manual one, and I'd like to see what it would be like if anyone is willing to let me test drive theirs. I have over four years of experience driving manual as a daily driver, so you don't need to worry about a newbie ruining your clutch and grinding gears. I live in the Crystal Lake area of Illinois for reference on where I am located, and am willing to do some traveling if need be.

As for what kind of Comanche I'm looking for: manual obviously, 4.0 or 2.5, perhaps the 2.5 more so, since I have experience already with the 4.0. Looking to try the two and four wheel drive versions, since I think I was spoiled with having Select-Trac during winter 2009/2010. I will also note that I have no experience off-roading.

Thank you in advance for those willing to let me have go.

I think this is the first time I've seen a full photo of your diesel MJ. Looks lie a sweet, solid ride. What are your normal shift points and what RPM do you run at cruising speed (65-70 mph)?

OP - sorry about the thread jack but I just had to ask. If you get down to AL you can try my 91 4.0 AX-15.

Umm... I can't help you out with the 2.5L or 4.0L with a stick, but my '86 with the factory turbo diesel is a stick.

Maybe?

Rob

Do you borrow for extended periods of time or just kind of a day-to-day type of deal?

Crystal Lake eh? Have we met? Less than 20 miles away from me. Have to have.

Not gonna lie, I was hoping you would be one of the responses on here, since you live close. I had not, however, considered the diesel, which would be a fun and unique experience. I mean, how many people can say they've driven an original diesel Comanche? And hey, it's a four cylinder, that counts, right?  ;)

No worries, I think it looks pretty sweet too. That, and I'm used to thread jacks on here anyways; makes a thread more friendly and lively.

Oh gawd... I don't know if I have ever gotten it up to 65-70. I don't ask much of it. That little Renault is usually buzzing around 3,000 RPMS @ 60 with the 4.10's. It does it just fine, and maintains speed, but I just don't like pushing it beyond that. It's in retirement. I'm not going to ask the soul old to do much, it's just happier than a clam puttering around and doing the backroads speed limits. A sunset, a country road, some fields and trees whipping by as the tunes jam along with the hum of the motor is all it needs to do. As for the shift points... It's been a few weeks since it's been out... Couldn't tell ya honestly. I've had a bunch of full pics of it up, but Facebook keeps changing the addresses on them so the links die out.

If anyone ever wants to drive it, as long as you already know how to drive stick, by all means. If you are out this way, give me some notice and I'll shine it up and get it ready to go. I'm riding shotgun to keep an ear and eye on the old man, but that's all. Once the snow flies and the salt drops it gets parked though, so plan accordingly.

Does this Saturday work for you? I have the whole day to do what I want, since I have them off from work.

Hey MO isnt too far...

I actually have family down in St. Louis, so MO isn't that far of a stretch really. Kansas City might be pushing it though. I appreciate the offer. Looking forward to seeing what you dig up from that river too!

If you find your way over to Ohio you're free to drive the Purple People Eater. 2.5/5 speed, but geared for the 4 speed. So forget that 5th exists and imagine it still has a 4 speed (as the ratios for 1st through 4th are the same).

I doubt I'll ever find myself out there, but if I do, I'll keep you in mind. Thanks for the offer.

It was definitely a fun and unique experience! The adrenaline from the excitement was pumping a bit, as well as being the only person besides Rob to drive it.

I spent the better part of two hours driving, talking, and learning all about the truck I saw when I was a kid and though was cool for whatever reason. And diesels; I learned about those too.

Thanks again to Rob for letting me drive his pride and joy, explaining a ton of things I didn't know, and showing me his collection of Comanche stuff. This was a great way to be welcomed into the community.

Looking forward to the day when I can finally scrape together enough money for my own.
