Xj To Mj Cross Member Problem

Recommended Posts

I didn't drop the crossmember on mine. I think the MJ short or long bed is long enough so you don't have to lower the TC or use a SYE. The AX15 I got was from a 97 TJ. I had to redrill the holes in the back of the AX15 to make the TC work right.

Dropping the cross member puts a lot of strain on the engine mounts, making them wear out faster and messes up the rear driveshaft angles. You now need to turn up the pinion to get them aligned again. The only thing it fixes is the front driveshaft if you're using a Wrangler transmission and don't want to clearance the truck floor for the double cardan joint.

Even on shorter vehicles with a lot of lift, it should only be a temporary solution until a permanent fix like a SYE can be installed.

I have already put the 91 Cherokee 4x4 drive train in the 88MJ and added  4.5 rough Country kit without 2 many hassles.  The kit came with the spacers to drop the cross member 1.5" ....and the installation manual backs it up.  You guys are talking Wanglers and Newer model TJ's . Are you guys speaking from experience with XJ's and MJ's?

You shouldn't, as long as you measure it right and get it balanced. Might as well replace the u-joints too since their operating angles will be changed due to the lift. Sometimes they don't like that and driveline vibes can occur.

XJs and MJs are what we do here. DO NOT drop your cross member in an MJ.

Don't believe ANYTHING Rough Country says. They do not have a very good reputation when it comes to quality. If they can't make the parts right, what makes you think they can engineer a lift kit right?

There are differences between XJs and MJs that matter. A lot of lift kit manufacturers either don't realize this, or just don't care.

I'm really not understanding this problem with the crossmember not lining up, and it's not the first time I've seen it.

XJ/MJ crossmembers are the same.  They have the same mounting holes.  The transmissions are the same, and the mounts are the same.  If nothing's lining up, then you're either missing something, or have something on incorrectly.

Do you have that stupid little zig zag plate that goes between the mount and the trans?  Are you sure it's not a YJ mount?

Can we please get some pics of it not lining up/the setup?

Yeah, I'm not understanding this either. Something's incorrect or the frame is twisted. Everything should line up using the correct cross-member mounting hole set and tranny adapter.
