Gas Milage Problem

Recommended Posts

i gotta question, what could cause me to go from bein in between 1/2 and 1/4 of a tank of gas to 1/4 in a matter of ten minutes, saturday i drove all over town purdy much and stayed in between 1/2 and 1/4 of a tank of gas, went to work today (ten minute drive from my house) and was still in between the two but i get home and i'm a 1/4, i don't have a fuel leak (i hope not since i just replaced every hose on my MJ) but i do have a 2se carb and a 5 speed manual, could it be the gears i'm in cause my truck to use more gas?

Bouncing around is pretty common too lol.  Again, it's due to the fact that it's a simple and antiquated design.  The gas sloshes around a lot in the tank while you're moving, so the gauge will serve only to give you a rough estimate of the amount of gas.

If I fill my tank I can drive 75 - 80 miles before the needle even moves. Another 75 miles it goes from full to half.  I goes to 1/4 tank after another 75...and so on.  Inaccurate yes, but if you drive it long enough you should get the feel for it.

If I'm going downhill to the left, it reads fuller than if I'm going uphill, to the right.  Since the fuel moves, so does the needle.

The sender is just a float...open up the back of your toilet...it's like that.

You'll notice the difference in tanks...the 16gal tank has two straps holding it and the 23.5gal has three straps holding the tank

:hmm:  Ummm... mine is a 16 gallon tank and it has 3 straps holding it up... I'm not so sure that's a good way of identifying tank sizes.  Better yet to the OP, there should be a little plate on the size of the tank, same side as the pump assembly, and center of the tank, just slightly above the pinch seam. It will either have a "16 gal" engraved or "23.5 gal".

Also there is no knowing what mods any number of previous owners did to them. A 16 gal tank will only reach 3/4 of the way between the front of the bed and the rear wheel well. A 23.5 gal tank will occupy all the space between the front of the bed and rear wheel well. So far I have never seen a plate, tag or label giving a tank size. I have pulled over a dozen of them. Also the difference between short bed and long bed will effect tank size, placement.

The long bed MJ will have a 16 gal tank standard. 23,5 gal optional. A short bed MJ will have a standard 18.5 gal tank.

well i'll look on the tank, i'll look for a plate, by trucks bed is weird though it's 7'8" i think eith 8" or 6" but either way a little over 7' and a half (by the way is that considered an 8' bed?)

so i do have a 16 gal tank, same size as my dads and i know thats a 16 gal tank, but it looks like it's supposed to have 3 straps on it, i got one in the rear, one in the middle but the two ends are held on my the gas tank shroud but the rear strap in in between the tank and the shroud is that normal?

I thought the '86 were only the long beds. The short beds were not introduced until '87.  The OP says he has an '86.

The '86s were only long beds.  Standard 16 gal tank with 23.5 gal optional.  There should be three straps holding up the tank, the first strap (nearest to the front of the Jeep) has a "skid plate" if you can call it that.  It's made of plastic and is bolted to the first strap.  The engraved plate may or may not still be there.  Mine was, so that's how I know its true capacity.
