Tiny bit of background -

For about a year, the CEL on my XJ has been popping up once in awhile.  If it was still there by the time I got to use a reader, it always read as "Torque converter lockup solenoid".  After the first time, I started paying attention to when the converter was locking, and noticed it did hesitate to lock once in awhile right before the CEL came one.

However, Saturday night on my way to go see a movie, I got up on the highway and it would not lock... or go into OD.  It was stuck in 3rd and unlocked.  Even popping it out of drive and into 3rd, then back into drive didn't convince it to shift or lock.  It acted normally on the way home, all day yesterday, and on the way to work this morning.

I'm going to check the fluid when I get home, but was hoping for some other suggestions.  I hope it's simple, if I have to put any decent amount of cash into the transmission on this thing, I'm swapping in an AX-15.

No kidding.  I am so sick of driving an automatic, but being my only vehicle, I can't afford for it to be down if something goes wrong mid swap. (I could easily get a ride to work, but I need the XJ for work as well).

Also, does anyone know of any wires off the trans/ECU/TCU that shows which solenoids are active?  I'd like to set up some LCDs that show me what gear it's in and TC lock.  It's fine when accelerating, but I'd like to monitor its downshifting.  (Also it would confuse people that rode with me)

Never have.  It's never really been a thought, since the shifter has always clicked into each position just fine.  Truck's back to normal, except I think something snapped in the drum on the left side.  Heard a light pop when braking earlier and now it pulls to the right.

Ugh.

Yep, you sound like me with your last sentence... If my AW4 quits, an AX15 is going in its place.

x2.  I have a feeling that my 90 MJ might be the donor to convert my 96 XJ to a stick and awd.

Ohh... that would be nice.  Did MJs ever have a NP242 as an option from factory?

not officially.  But I swapped this one in myself.

not officially.  just about anything was possible back then since they were desperate to sell trucks.  but I swapped this one in myself.

I meant the linkage on the throttle body.

Ohhh... uh.  No.  Is there a writeup for that?

What? Using a Comanche as a donor for a Cherokee?  :shake:

I've done it.  XJ I had before this one, I put a 4.0 out of an MJ into it.

"I purposely mis-adjusted the cable to see what the shift points would be like with it way off. Not fun. Downshifts only when plastered to the floor. Now they back to about 2/3-3/4 throttle. Right where they should be. Torque converter lock-up was way off too, Most of the time it wouldn't lock up. Now it locks after steady throttle is reached and unlocks when more than a slight amount is applied.

Worth a shot. I checked the adjustment on my XJ shortly after I bought it, but mine was in spec. From what I read, it's commonly overlooked, and can cause many issues, from poor mileage, performance, and driveability issues.

Perhaps it's the fact that I own a Dodge diesel with a Chryco transmission in it (read: it's a total POS and needs constant maintenance), this seems pretty trivial to me.  Your TC lockup solenoid is likely bad - or the wiring going to it went bad.  The PCM (well, actually, the TCM) is sensing an ohm reading that is out of spec and it's throwing the code.  The fact that you have TC lockup issues only further confirms the fact that the solenoid is likely bad.  The good news for the AW4 is that replacing that solenoid is very easy (well, easy when compared to what I had to go through to replace mine on my Dodge).  It will require dropping the pan and getting messy, but a write-up can be found here: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/aw4-solenoid-replacement-write-up-no-56k-717206/

Everyone with an auto should go do this.  She's a completely different truck.

It's definitely not acting completely normal, but it's a lot better.  CEL hasn't come on, and the converter seems to be playing nice.

Still getting an occasional 'snap' when starting out, like it forgot to go into gear, but it's not as bad as it was.
