My 89 has a small hole in the bottom corner of my gas tank from my rollover, if I straighten out the hole it seems like it could be either welded back up after fully cleaning it out and letting all the gases out or maybe slapping some JB weld on it? Or should I try to find a replacement 15 gal tank? Second! My 87 has the 2.5 with a plastic valve cover cracked in about 10 places, should I bother spending the money on a metal one or get a new plastic one again? Third! the guage cluster in my 87 stopped working and the gas gauge didnt work so I pulled it all apart and wiggled the needle and disconnected the plugs and put them back in the way I took them out and now none of my gauges work :( Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
jimoshel Posted May 17, 2013 Share Posted May 17, 2013 I have repaired gas tanks using oxy acetylene, wire feed and JB.They all worked equally well. As with anything, proper preparation is the key to a successful weld. As far as VC goes, I prefer metal. However I would not remove a good plastic cover just to swap. Only if it was broke and needed replacing. Get another GC. When welding a gas tank it is critical to remove any and ALL traces of fumes. My method is to completely drain the tank. Run a hose from a exhaust pipe, from a running engine, into the tank. When the tank is hot to the touch it is safe to weld on. Filling the tank with water is not effective. gogmorgo Posted May 17, 2013 Share Posted May 17, 2013 Rock auto carries new fuel tanks if you don't want to try fixing it. I'll be going that route later this summer. I looked into fixing the leak in mine, but discovered that the whole side is rusting badly from wheel spray. I've definitely heard of people repairing them, though. JB weld should be fuel safe. Comanche County Posted May 17, 2013 Share Posted May 17, 2013 IIRC correctly you've got a flux core welder like mine. I tried to repair my neighbors MJ tank but the flux will leave porous welds with micro sized holes. Ended up taking to a machine shop and having them weld up the rusted areas with a proper shielded welder. Cost me 20 bucks. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
