MJfanatic87 Posted May 9, 2013 Share Posted May 9, 2013 I have a 87 MJ with the orginal straight 6 and the non ax-15 5 speed and want to convert it to a 2000 I6 with the ax-15, what do i need to do in order to make this happen? If you REALLY know what you are doing, it could probably be done in a day. But i would give yourself a long weekend just in case. There are a few issues that have to be overcome, like the intake gasket, knock sensor port, temp sender unit, and distributor hole. (i think 2000 starts the coil packs :hmm:) 1st question......what Jeep do you plan to aquire the 2000 engine from? Year shouldnt matter, even the last 4.0 ever made (04) can be transplanted into an MJ. I have put a 93 Grand Cherokee 4.0 in my 89 and it was a straight drop, they only issue i ran into was with the pilot bearing. I can explain if interested. . . ftpiercecracker1 Posted May 9, 2013 Share Posted May 9, 2013 If by "use the new stuff" you mean using the electronics from the 2000, yes it would be better, BUT and this is a big but. You have to swap EVERYTHING including engine harnesses, interior harnesses, dash, gauge cluster, and weilding new plates onto the fire wall to acomodate the newer steering column. In other words, its a huge ordeal to do what you are asking. Is it doable? Yes. Diffcult? Extremely. Rebuilding your motor would probably cost your three times the amount it would simply to drop in the one thats in the 2000. If you do decide to rebuild your original motor i would recommend looking into building a stroker, it would add only a couple hundred bucks to the rebuild, but give you a huge performance boost. Renix stuff can be swapped over and used. The big issue here is what Jeep the block comes from as the mountings changed. XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange. 2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange. XJ/ZJ blocks and 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1991 to 1995 YJ and 1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa). TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ. If there is more to doing this swap please fill me in, please and thank you! :thumbsup: I think since you have the i6 an ax-15 should bolt right up. The trans cross member you move it.
