After trying for an hour and coming up with nada using the search function, I'll try this. Does anyone have a link to adding hydraulic cylinders to the MJ hood? I've already got a dozen cylinders out ready to see what I can come up with. Just don't want to re invent the wheel if it's already been done. One thing I'm worried about is using a too strong cylinder and buckling the hood. I will be experimenting on a wrecked XJ before I actually try a MJ. :dunno: :hmm:

Jimoshel,

Let me know if the Redline installation manual helps you do the install.  I like the Redline kit, but I am too cheap from other projects right now.

I measured the length, fully extended the strut is 20", compressed it's 12.5".  My only complaint is the hood is almost vertical, it is quite a reach to close it.

Jim,

Here's a write up using the hatch lift struts from a late model XJ:

Indeed, the hatch strut DIY set up raises the hood way open...... but it's cheap and uses only one strut.  The Redline kit, while pricey, works perfectly as it should using 2 struts, and keeps the hood at a reasonable height to reach and close.  I had the Redline kit on an XJ and liked it alot.

Holy cow! There are MJs with hood insulation and painted engine bays? I thought all of them were grease colored (LOL).

Neat installation!
