Need Help With A Couple Of Issues

Recommended Posts

I have a 87 4wd, 6cyl, ax-15. As I was leaving work today and pulling away from a stop sign the truck did not want to accelerate.  I got it to move by putting it in 4wd but had no  sounds from the tranny prior to the issue. It would idle fine as i was parked but when I released the clutch the truck would die- not fun since I was in traffic with no flashers and on a steep hill. Fuel level is low but don't think this is the cause of the problem. I managed to get a tow into a nearby gas station where it is currently sitting and as soon as the secondary vehicle gets home will try and go back to troubleshoot.  Once I got the truck on level ground I was unable to do any other troubleshooting as the battery was too low by then. The last couple of months its been idling normally but the fuel mileage has dropped to around 6mpg. Theres been no changes to the truck other than a different set of tires on the front that are the same size but they werent balanced after i put them on the hubs. IMHO when I take my foot off the gas the truck seems to slow down more- something like an engine braking effect that shouldnt be there. Will be happy for any advice.

Sounds like a brake is stuck. I'd jack up each wheel and see if they spin freely. Would explain you bad mileage, and it dying when you take off. Moves in 4wd because the lower gearing makes up for the brakes being on.

the bad mileage has been for over two months but the lack of movement and the dying was just today. When I took off from the stop sign the truck went about a quarter of a block before the lack of acceleration and following issues with the dying. Even pushing the accelerator while in neutral would only get a slow rise to 3k on rpms.

happy to report the stalling was a fuel issue and managed to get it home but if anyone has any suggestions on the mpg problem that would be great. One other symptom that may be part of it is the needle on the gauge jumps back and forth especially once it gets below half a tank. I think i've seen this before somewhere on here but could that be a fuel sending unit issue?

Ever clicked on the link in my signature for renix tips? You've got the C101 connector which carries tons of info betwee the engine management systems different parts. The ground refreshing is just cuz it's such a crappy system to begin with. Snug up your intake manifold bolts. Inspect all your vacuum lines, especially the one from the throttle body to MAP sensor on the firewall.

Remove the left taillight and refresh the ground there. That's for the rear lighting and fuel pump.
