I have looked at many designs and found some i like but i don't see paying $100 bucks if i can make it. Plus its more fun if i make it. 87manche Posted March 16, 2007 Share Posted March 16, 2007 I did not make this, but it was made for a friend and I got it from him. it's just a ring around the diff, and a piece of 1/4" steel that covers the ring gear. If I hadn't gotten it cheap I would have gone with a full diff cover. Dealing with getting the diff cover, the ring and such all lined up is a PITA when it comes to maintenance. and just because it's in the same album: say hi to rocky. For my low buck diff protection (for now), I'm going to snag a couple stock covers from the 'yard tomorrow ($4 each) and cut out the fill plug on one of them. Then I'll get my neighbor to weld the two together as he sees fit, and install the double cover with some longer bolts. It'll work until I get cabbage for aftermarket stuff. The one from Ruff Stuff is stupid strong, it's freakin 3/8" steel - for like $70. Duner Posted March 17, 2007 Share Posted March 17, 2007 has anyone ever truly tested on these diff/ring protectors it seems that if your jeep slipped during rock crawling the weight and impact could still damage the ring or cause the cover seal to fail and how strong are the cast covers that some companies sell they look good but do they really work otherwise I have some ideas of my own on how to build a skid plate to protect the diff with out giving up to much ground clearance or spending that much money. 87manche Posted March 17, 2007 Share Posted March 17, 2007 I'm not much of a "driving by braile" kind of guy, but that rock ring took a pretty substantial hit at flatnasty and it was fine. by substantial I mean "Oh $#!&" and by fine I mean, lightly bent. Duner Posted March 17, 2007 Share Posted March 17, 2007 I would expect them to bend to help absorb some of the shock so that's normal but didn't want to spend big money and unintentionaly crunch it and then have it puke fluid all over the trail. When I go wheeling I like to have a good time. I don't won't to repair something that I thought was protected but its good to know that it worked when it was supposed to. Our upcoming jeepspeed project will have a reinforced diff housing where the tubes join so we will have ample mounting surface for a bolt on skid plate to protect the diff and strengthen the axle. There are about 150 Rock Halo's running the Arizona Rocks!! Not one has come back!! We also do 3/8's thick covers and have had 0 complaints. 87manche Posted March 18, 2007 Share Posted March 18, 2007 I don't see a problem with the rock rings, the bolts are what takes the impact, not the stock cover. mines held on with grade 8 hardware, and it's not budged. My driving error at flatnasty resulted in me dropping the entire front end about 2 feet right onto the front diff. It was severe enough that I really though I had wrecked the front diff in the cab.
