Spare Tire Cable Repair

Recommended Posts

I have seen as many as 4 clamps on a cable and it still pulled out. Not on a spare tire winch but still steel cable. You have to tie a knot in the cable and then use a clamp to tie the end. A steel Nico sleeve works much better but has to be properly installed. Also don't see how the reel can work without those clamps catching or binding on something, plus rubbing against the cable. It may work for awhile but in my opinion very Mickey Mouse. Just get a new cable and swage the ends. Do it right or don't do it at all.

You don't "saddle a dead horse".

Those clamps should be flipped around,

Saddle should go on the tension end.

3 backwards, 2 sideways, and one looks correct to me (2nd from top)

Though the fact that the bottom 2 fit sideways like that tells me they are the wrong size clamps.

I've been wanting to get mine fixed, but that's not the issue I have. When I got the truck, the spare was sitting in the bed because one of the PO's didn't put it back underneath and so the cable and bar are dangling (not too far) but the winch is rusted solid...
