Ford 8.8

Recommended Posts

Those bolts on the rear were the flange bolts to the rear end can I go to Farm and Home and get some grade 8 bolt or not. If so what size are they. Also learned something new about this and wanted to no if you guy now wither or not this is true. You can use the ranger flange and that well mount up to the stock drive shaft u-joint. I don’t know if this true but the flange that I have accepted the stock u-joint and it look like it fits.

I don't have complete answers for you, more like half answers. I do know that all of the Ford 8.8 flange adapters will bolt to all 8.8s. That includes Rangers, F-150s, Aerostars, etc. Don't know which is the Jeep size. I'm also betting that the flange bolts are hardened and metric threads that can be challenging to find in hardware stores.

well the dealer ship wanted like 14.00 per bolt. so i guess it to the junk yard i go

Try to going to a place like Fastenal or another fastener distributor and look for whatever Grade 8 (SAE) or Class 10.9 bolt (metric) that fits. You'll have brand new fasteners and they shouldn't be anywhere near $14 a pop.

Not quite.

They're a metric 'close tolerance' 12.9. DO NOT USE A 10.9! Although it might work in the short term it's not worth it in the long term.

I want to say they're M8 x 1.25. But I really don't think so for sure. If I had one lying around I'd put a gauge on it and see.

I bought them new when I did mine. Cursed it for all it was worth. But it got the job done. You could ask them for the thread/size of them - but I doubt they know without ordering them in... Oh, if you do use the factory ones - they put red loc-tite on them and it is REAL effective. I had to cut them off later...

The bolts are metric and you can go to a bolt shop and get for around $2 each. I just got 4 about 2 weeks ago.

As for the flange adapters, if it's the same size as on the Explorer it's one size to big for the MJ/XJ shaft but will fit TJ's.

The flange that I have has Ford stamped on it so I think it is the Ford Ranger because the guys at Car Quest and I did some research on the net and they came up with that you could use the ford ranger flange. I am going to find that link and I’ll post it up here I just thought it would be a cheaper solution and one that you can find at most junk yards.

I went over on NAXJA and did a search and pulled that # up and went down to the dealer and handed him the number. He look at me like I was weird or smoking something good and asked "were did you get that number" like it was top secret or something. But I got the bolts so I am happy I will be buying one more set to throw in to the truck. For spears just incase I need them. Plus are you done with the 8.8 swap and if so is there any thing that you would of done different if so what? Plus any thing to watch out for that I could run into.
